Vernon had to give up acting in the 1950s when he was diagnosed with diabetes and was left completely blind.
When Shemp Howard died, Vernon attended his funeral. He wanted to see his old friend one last time. He reached the open coffin and felt Shemp's face up and down like a blind person would. While "seeing" Shemp with his hand, Vernon broke down in tears right there.
