Right now, my faith is in the fact that for Americans, "freedom of speech" isn't just a promise on paper - it's practically genetic. We are NOT a people who know how to shut up about our complaints.
Any regime that tries to make things significantly worse for the country as a whole WILL hear about it. From millions.

@danialexis This is why I can’t see us going down like Germany did. As Americans we are gigantic assholes. We are obnoxious AF. And even though that might be our undoing at first it might turn out to be what saves us.
@Siren_six Yeah, as a rule we are only polite when it gets us what we want.
And if my many interactions with folks who learn I'm a school librarian has taught me anything, it's that Americans also tend to be all "excuse me, the government works for ME, my TAXES pay your SALARY." Which is not an attitude conducive to being stepped on by that government.
