I want to rant so badly and openly about my home insurance. I need to be vague though.

2019 storm damage in November but they couldn’t safely do inspections until late Jan 2020. Said they would replace my roof but not cover the water damage. Then changed it to patch roof right before everything in my state went into lockdown for Covid. I paid someone to patch everything it could possibly be. Planned to fight it when it opened again.

So Aug 2020 tropical storm hit and was later declared emergency area by Biden in early 2021.

September I had water coming through my ceiling lights and ceiling seams, insurance adjuster were not in the field and told I had to wait.

Lost heat, air, laundry and electricity in that part of the house. Water damage was extreme and turning into black mold. It’s really bad and no help because of Covid

Spring 2021 mold was so bad I would wake up choking and couldn’t breathe anytime we had wet conditions

June 2021 paid second deductible for new claim and roof was replaced but wouldn’t fix anything else. Had structural engineer do a non invasive inspection. It was closed out a 2nd time

September 2021 the night they closed it I stayed up and found contact info for the board of directors and pleaded that they reopen it. They Assigned an Advocate to investigate

November 2021 Advocate ruled that everything should have been covered under the first claim, I had full coverage with all the add ons since 2001/2002

Adjuster called and said congrats but don’t think I had an open check book. Everything had to be approved by him before any work could be done. He refused to help me find the right contractors. They did send a check for hvac but it can’t be done before everything is replaced. I have black mold in every location in my house

It just gets worse from here, ended up with rash, infection so bad on the right side of face, ear and neck I had to go to the hospital because they thought my organs might shut down.

The advocate had an inspection done that found exactly what happened and I have mold in the attic and a second bathroom above the downstairs. All vents are taped off along with access to half my house. I got a propane heater in 2021 and a lawyer

The list just keeps growing from here and I am really angry because if they would have just replaced the roof to begin with non of this would have happened.

I had to buy underwear and cheap clothes during Covid every month because if I hand washed anything it molded as it dried.

The lawyer got the run around even as problems grew. He refused me a hotel during a heatwave. The house had so much moisture the windows and doors swelled and can’t be opened or closed on hot days.

My wood floors actually are warped and they were only 10 years old. The insulation in the walls and crawl spaces have fallen. They denied everything I submitted using a new adjuster. He sent out a third party inspection and he added that my kitchen needed to be ripped out and replaced between mold spread and everything swollen from moisture. The adjuster refused to give me or my lawyer a copy of that inspection. Now getting ready to file with the state insurance office. Almost 5 years

@SatuUnelmia I'm gonna guess the insurance was issued by (initials only) SF?

Only because I have seen this exact thing play out from them sooooooo maaaaaaany times.

@Avidspark no think military veteran. The second time they closed it they tried to tell me it was my fault because I was disabled and couldn’t maintain the bathrooms. I had annual receipts from Amazon for items I used for maintenance beyond just cleaning. The storm caused a break in my roof by the vent pipe under an area that showed no damage at all. Rain free flowed down the pipe and spread over all the areas downstairs and between the walls.

@SatuUnelmia Ah, that sux...even worse that a company purportedly there to HELP VETERANS is instead exploiting them for $.

Is there any decent insurance company anymore? I think not, sadly. Better to put premiums into a savings account on your own, probably.

@Avidspark @SatuUnelmia We aren’t legally allowed to do that. You can for health care but how many could really afford to save what they would need for a medical emergency? And we are legally obligated to have car insurance if we are going to drive. And in areas like where I live you need to drive. Even in Lansing the buses stopped running 11pm on weeknights and midnight Friday and Saturdays. Here I could get along without a car but it would cripple me socially since we live pretty far apart
