The name Panama originally meant Place of Many Fish. And Panama does indeed have many fish. But is the Caribbean or Pacific side best for diving? Well, it depends what you want. Experienced divers wanting the best Panama has to offer should head for the Pacific for sharks, whales and rays. Beginners, or those wanting a more relaxed time, choose the Caribbean, also amongst the cheapest in the region.

@SCUBATravel

Scuba diving the Caribbean is not exactly cheap. Especially with dying coral reefs.

@LnzyHou It’s never been an inexpensive sport ever. That is even more true if you want your own regulator, BCD and dive computer, which everyone who dives frequently, wants.

@LnzyHou Good choice of fins. I got a lot of looks the last time I went snorkeling because I had scuba Pro jet fins of yore, which apparently are not as ubiquitous as they once were.

@LnzyHou I sorkeled a coral head in a protected park that I have snorkeled on no less than six times. I’m sad to tell you that the fish population was way less than half.

@MidnightRider

My son who lived/dove in the Caribbean 9 yrs will no longer dive there. The bleached/dying coral breaks his heart.

@LnzyHou I’m retired from diving, but I did make more than 100 sport dives in my life.

@MidnightRider

My son taught his wife-to-be’s uncle to dive at 78 yrs of age. He dove several times later and called scuba diving the greatest thrill of his life.

It was a joy to see.

@LnzyHou It is not a sport without danger. Just climbing up the swim ladder on a rocking boat would be very challenging at age 78 with the full complement of scuba gear

@MidnightRider

Not with my 6’3” son as your instructor.

He frequently grabbed Uncle Harold to right him.
