From about 2002-2009, I had an English mate, living 10km away, in France, who rented an upscale villa.
His neighbor was a "retired Egyptian Air Force Lieutenant General" ~ we were invited to a party in the General's gated, guarded & walled villa, worth about €6 million (2008?).
At some point, there or after, someone 'whispered':
"You know a Lt Gen's salary is about USD 120K/yr?"
(We didn't)
