I think politicians abusing the phrase and its use by TERFs and other sources of hate is why I have such a viscerally negative reaction to "common sense" being used in a political context.
More than a few times, an appeal to "common sense" has been a prelude to getting rid of those trans people over there because they're not real anyway or criminalizing homelessness or cutting taxes on the rich or cutting off people's benefits.
