What is the measure of "a person:" Is it as simple as being human? Is it a more nuanced construct? Does personhood require self-awareness? Does it require free will?

@PBesso Are we conflating personhood with sentience or sapience?

I think of trees, dogs, cats, and rivers as people.

I don't think personhood necessarily means sentient. If it required sentience, a lot of human beings would no longer qualify.

@AskTheDevil Whether we base personhood on sentience or sapience, what makes it okay to behave the way some humans do towards others? I appreciate your views. I think they align with my question. Some humans abuse trees, plants, dogs, cats, and rivers. What makes that okay?

@PBesso I don't really think it is okay, the way many humans treat others, human or not. It is a source of some distress to me.

@AskTheDevil I agree with you. Thanks for inspiring my next post. Have a good one!

@PBesso Thank you for sharing your thoughts, that provoke more thought!
