What is the measure of "a person:" Is it as simple as being human? Is it a more nuanced construct? Does personhood require self-awareness? Does it require free will?

If we agree that all human beings are persons and that "persons" deserve respect, what aspects of personhood justify discrimination based on race, sexuality, or nationality? Let's unpack this. +

@PBesso I agree all sentient beings are persons. I don't know that they all deserve respect. I don't respect bigots, and those who spread hatred and inflict cruelty. I don't respect stupidity, either.

It's patterns of choices and moral character - things that a person decides for themselves - that matter to me. Not nonsense like what color or shape the sentient being is.

But I absolutely reserve the right to withhold respect from those undeserving of it by character, word and deed.
