@wolfwoman was speaking just the other day how a church she knows is getting resistance for trying to help homeless folks.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman The cruelty is the point. The degradation. The creation of lack and scarcity and fear is the point.
They don't want the hungry fed by anyone. They want the rest of us to see what happens if you don't keep working harder and harder for Master.
@AskTheDevil @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman
This. ☝🏻☝🏻☝🏻
@AskTheDevil I think that's true as a general point of strategy from the top dogs. It's the folks that consistently show up to shoot themselves in the genitals that baffle me. Social engineering through AM radio, cable news, social media, and yes, some churches over decades has certainly taken it's toll, I suppose. @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman
@Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman THey take advantage of the worst in the human psyche, and they teach their followers that the tools they could use to better themselves, learning, understanding of facts, reason, compassion, are all "bad stuff".
@Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman I also wonder if some people are just born predisposed to be dumb and mean, too. That doesn't help.
@AskTheDevil @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus
Ah, now you are getting into one of my fascinations since I started studying child development in the 80's! (I switched majors, ended with a BA in Psychology). Nature vs. nurture has always been a hot topic amongst psychologists. 💙
@AskTheDevil There are plenty of flavors of hateful people running around out there. I try not to worry too much about why's unless I see something that makes me think I can do something about it. It's rare.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman
@Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman My feeling is that if you don't find out "why" you cannot properly fix or cope with something.
Not everyone needs to devote all their energy to "why" but that question needs answering or we're just going to tread water until we sink or are sunk.
@AskTheDevil Oh, I think in a big picture sense that you're probably right. Of course, even if the not-hateful people come to a consensus about causes/effects and a course of action to alleviate the problem, there'd be an enormous amount of resistance to changing the status quo. Too many entrenched interests. Not saying that improvements can't be made, but I think it'll be a grind.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman
@Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman It has definitely been a grind so far.
@AskTheDevil Two steps forward , 1 or 2 steps back, yes. In our current condition I don't see much of an alternative, though.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman
@Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus @wolfwoman My generic suggestion is "stop doing the same things that never worked before" but by itself, that's not terribly helpful, is it?
@AskTheDevil @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus It can be, if you can get people to listen. Around here, I'd say you're mostly preaching to the choir. I'm a tenor, btw. 😉
@wolfwoman @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus I always wanted to be a tenor! ; )
@AskTheDevil @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus I never wanted to be a soprano, but as a kid (very young) through middle school, I was. Then my voice began dropping, to alto in high school and college, and was often asked to help out the perenially skimpy tenor section. In my late 50's I discovered that range was getting more comfortable and now I really can't sing even alto II anymore. I guess it's really common.
@wolfwoman @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus I ended up with a broken baritone (where you can sing low notes, then there's part of an octave you cannot hit on the higher end, then a few notes above that without hitting falsetto).
@AskTheDevil @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus Actually, that perfectly describes my tenor range. I can still do falsetto if I remember to not sing from my head ;) Ah, the joys of aging.
@wolfwoman @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus At least I can do goth music. Typically, you sing 1-3 notes over and over. ; )
@Ironworker229 @AskTheDevil @NiveusLepus Agreed, across the board. Many days, the fight seems too big and I'm so tired, and yet I can't give up. Sometimes the most I can do is be kind to those I encounter and make very small donations to causes. I also write #PostcardsToVoters , which is probably my most "active" activism.
@wolfwoman @Ironworker229 @NiveusLepus And every bit of that helps.
The way you deal with big problems is typically to break them down into smaller, manageble ones, right?
The good we do has effects we may not be able to see in the moment, but they spread and encourage waves of good acts.
@AskTheDevil @wolfwoman I wonder the same thing. There is enough, especially if the humans weren’t so intent on killing each other, then there would be more than enough.
But I don’t know how to get them all there, but I’ll continue doing my level best to make the parts of the world I touch better.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman 🖤 🖤 🖤
@NiveusLepus @AskTheDevil
Some speaker once said (paraphrasing, it was long ago), "We all have a 3' circle around us all the time. So I focus on doing what I can to improve my little circle, everywhere I go." Words to live by and I know you have a bigger circle, dear Becca.
@wolfwoman @AskTheDevil That’s very kind. The one thing I know is that it’s all unnecessary, and even thought I might not be able to fix it, I can still do something about it.
@NiveusLepus I believe that was her point. Others have said similar and I always find inspiration to keep doing what I can. BTW, she had us illustrate the point by having us stand, stretch one arm out, and notice that it was more or less 3', then turn slowly in a circle. Effective speaker.
@wolfwoman Highly effective!
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman I like how you put that:
"even though I might not be able to fix it, I can still do something about it"
🖤 👊
Reminds me of when Ft Lauderdale PD arrested a 90 year old man and two pastors for feeding the homeless.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/90-year-old-man-2-pastors-charged-with-feeding-homeless-in-florida/
I also can't believe that was 9.5 years ago. Feels like 5, tops.
@NiveusLepus @wolfwoman I love how Reagan and the Republicans told us that we shouldn't have government social welfare programs, because churches and community groups could step up and care for people.
But when someone _does_ try to help, they get sued and fined and arrested.
What. The. Fuck.
Why do we allow this?
Why do we not stand up and stop this bullshit?
