Speaker vote question for those who may know - if there were enough **GOP** "present" votes to lower the threshold, wouldn't that favor Hakeem Jeffries since he gets more votes as it stands now?

Secondary, how many "present" votes does it take to lower the threshold and by how much?

@JimmySheridanNV Every "present" vote lowers the denominator.

Everyone voting, the winner needs >50% of the votes. For 435 members, that's 218.

If one R votes "Present", that brings it to 434...meaning 217 votes needed for 50%.

In order for the 212 D votes for Jeffries to represent 50%, you'd need 11 "Present" votes from the GOP.
