Staffer of GOP congressman dies of COVID. It’s sad when anyone dies of this plague. I wonder, though, if the congressman will change his attitudes at all concerning the virus.

So far, the GOP has embraced Trump’s “it is what it is” attitude — people will die, oh well, open the bars and schools (while I keep my kids home).

@Myrth re "changing his attitude": it's hard for me to understand what republicans should turn to after 2020: consider all the Trump enablers as sell-outs and purge most of the GOP, or will people be like "I think they learned their lesson" and go back to voting for them? Because I cannot imagine conservatives voting democrat for several elections in a row, but I don't know how the GOP can manage such a purge in so little time.

@sgalzin for me, personally, I will never again vote for another Republican. They have accepted blatant white nationalism, they have accepted a move toward fascism, and they have accepted outright traitorous behavior (and happily benefited from it). There is a local woman whom I like, who is GOP and our coroner. I will never vote for her again. The party needs to go the way of the Whigs that they replaced. A new party is needed.

@sgalzin
But despite my personal feeling, I am curious. Just how deeply have they drunk the Kool-Aid? Is there any point at which they wake up and say “OMG what have we done?” Is there any point at which the reality hits so close to home that they are forced to reckon with the consequences of actions and policies? Or do they somehow manage to evade that thought process no matter how close to home it hits?

@Myrth @sgalzin

Never underestimate people's devotion to the sunken cost fallacy. It made Las Vegas what it is today.

@mcfate @Myrth thanks for your pov and sincerity, it gives me hope that common ground can be found in America.
