She's the boss, a master politician. He's just a conman grifter - out of his league.

I feel like the whole shutdown showdown is turning out to be a huge popularity boost for Nancy Pelosi.
Before all this I (and a lot of progressive independents I know) had very mixed feelings about her.
Now we're saying, hey, you know what, we *need* her in that position.

I have admired her skill since the political maneuvering that was required to pass the ACA. Was it my dream act? Of course not. But it was the best compromise at the time, and a helluva lot better than the nothing we had before. I followed the entire process with keen interest, as a cancer survivor who wanted protection for my pre-existing condition. She successfully herded cats to pull it off.
She is a strong leader and the right person for Speaker.

I always felt she had major skillz, I just wasn't sure she was using them appropriately. It felt like she was inclined to go straight for the killshot when a slap or two might have sufficed.*
But nowadays we're clearly in a situation where one side is throwing up targets that need to be shot down as efficiently as possible, and she's just the Speaker to do it.
*I admit I have no specific evidence for this, it was just my general impression.
You were probably paying more attention than I was.
No, actually, you were almost certainly paying more attention than I was.
@Myrth
The thing that shocked me is that the vilification actually worked with Repubs, considering she's done some very "bell weather conservative" things regarding funding for up armored HumVees and on the ground intelligence apparatus for war fighters. She's always been one of the most effective pol's I've seen.
