The most powerful solar flare of the current solar cycle occurred 16 hours ago. It peaked at X6.37 magnitude; X flares are the biggest.

High-energy particles and photons bombarded the sensor onboard NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (right), making the fuzzies.

Last Night's Forecast, in case you missed it:

In case you missed it from last night:

Another atmospheric river is about to strike California. Heavy rainfall, significant mountain snow, gusty winds and even a tornado or two will be possible. MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has a special Sunday night update.

A quick-moving clipper system will bring some snow to the Mid-Atlantic late Friday night into the predawn hours Saturday.

Here's a first stab at how much snow could fall:

Wisconsin just saw their FIRST February tornado on record.

Climate changed did demonstrably play a role, as off-season severe events are being increasingly fed by anomalously warm weather.

Northeast Snowstorm Update

A quick-moving snowstorm is plastering the coastal Northeast with a plowable snowfall, with up to a foot possible in some spots. The snow is increasing in intensity in southern New England but winding down to the west. Matthew Cappucci has an update.

breaking down possible snow totals in the app shortly!

A supercell near Henry, Illinois produced a on Thursday evening near Highway 18.

Here is Storm Chaser JordanHallWX coverage of this intense storm.

Sneaky Midwest Tornado Risk

A level 1 out of 5 marginal risk of severe weather has been drawn for northern Illinois, southern Wisconsin, and the Chicago metro area. There’s a low risk of a storm forming, but if it does, it could become a tornadic supercell. Meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has an update.

Unfortunately, has one more band of precipitation that could give Los Angeles and San Diego another 0.25-0.75 inches of rain this evening.

Any given place sees about 6 hours of rainfall, with snow in the mountains. The Sierra could see another 3-9 inches.

This is beneath the core of an upper-level low – a pocket of high altitude cold air, low pressure and spin aloft.

The frigid upper levels contrast with a milder surface, allowing surface pockets of air to rise and form downpours.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing an experimental Tropical Cyclone Forecast Cone Graphic on our around August 15, 2024, that includes inland tropical storm and hurricane watches and warnings for the continental U.S.

Category 6 Hurricane: Is it even possible?

The Saffir-Simpson scale, which rates hurricanes based on wind speed, ends at Category 5. But what would a hypothetical Category 6 look like? Is it even possible? MyRadar meteorologist Matthew Cappucci has a deep dive.

Here's one final look at the atmospheric river as it finally shifts east by Wednesday:

That made for a few isolated thunderstorms and a very low-end brief chance late Tuesday with some chance going into Wednesday.

But then we're not done yet – there's storm juice, or fuel (CAPE, that filters in behind the atmospheric river as temperatures aloft cool. The relatively warmer ocean contrasts, and heats surface air, encouraging it to rise.
