I read mostly fiction to escape the nonfiction horror for a little while. But the nonfiction horror is presently making me so stressed that I can’t settle in comfortably to the sweet merciful and momentary escape of the fiction. 😣 I just want to read.

@MotherDucker are you like me, in that information is what makes you feel safe?
When I'm stressed, I research. I read and investigate and listen to podcasts on the topic I'm trying to conquer. And even if nothing else changes, I have a little more knowledge and it helps me panic less because I can identify important info from not important info.
If this is you, it might be worthwhile reading non-escape books. Seems counterintuitive but may actually lower your stress.

@CarmenSlamdiego I think whatever the case, be it fiction or nonfiction, I need it to have a similar gravity. In 2016, I fell hard and fast into dystopian lit, reread 1984 and other Orwell, lots of Margaret Atwood. During COVID I sought to read things as powerful and as heart wrenching as the reality we were living like Disappearing Earth, Leave the World Behind, The Glass Hotel, This is How You Lose the Time War, The Unthinkable, and a whole bunch of poetry.

@MotherDucker have you read The Rose Code by Kate Quinn? That might have the energy you're looking for.
