This new optical disk player is sort of a test of my theory that there are about four factories in Shenzhen that make all the BluRay and DVD player innards in the entire world, they compete on fractions of a penny, and what they produce is completely fungible.

Different vendors just slap buttons onto it and cases around it.

@mcfate I’m not sure what’s involved to make this feature available, but I chose a Sony Blu-Ray specifically because it would read SACD’s and has a digital output (no built in DAC processing).

There aren’t many choices that check that box.

@MookyTroubadour

If I understand things right, the mechanism I'm talking about spins a disk, reads it, and spits out a stream of digits, along with some other basic commands.

What happens to the digits is Somebody Else's Problem, i.e. Sony's in your case. They decide what they want to be able to do with the digits it spits out.

The piece I'm thinking of is essentially all the moving parts (outside of a loading drawer or self-loading slot).

This one loads like an OG portable CD player.
