SCOTUS is considering a case that could end the Indian Child Welfare Act. It isn’t getting a lot of attention, but it’s hugely important to Native Americans,as it ensures that NA children are placed with family when possible or NA foster families, if not. Culturally, this is vital. And, of course, the importance to the mental well-being of NA children can’t be overstated. The challenge to ICWA contends it is racially biased and preferential, and oversteps federal authority. 1/3

This country, as a whole, whether from guilt or ignorance, tends to forget Native Americans are still here. They are. With vastly different and important cultures, languages, strengths, and needs. Prioritizing placing NA children within their familiar lifeway strengthens the bond of that community and increases the potential for repair of the family. It gives NA children and their community the ability to utilize traditional ways of healing or correcting the family situation. 2/3
