-- 50 years ago today, the Soviet Union made its final attempt at launching the N1 rocket. It was the Soviet counterpart to the US Saturn V, a super heavy-lift launch vehicle intended to deliver payloads beyond low Earth orbit. Underfunded and rushed, each of the four attempts to launch an N1 failed, and the program was canceled.
