Bad actors use direct messages to stay under the radar. We insist that people have some skin in the game to do direct messaging.
@mcfate @Melissa_scahffer @JeniRizio Thanks McFate. True.

Our awesome user guide is very helpful: https://help.counter.social
And as @SaltyVeruca said, Direct Messages are a pro feature, for all of our protection really.
@ceorl @Melissa_scahffer @JeniRizio Thanks for posting that!

I type that so often it is pure muscle memory :)
@ceorl I did not know it was a paid feature. Thanks for letting me know.
@JeniRizio
If you do want to have a private conversation with someone who is pro though, you can ask them to start the chat, and then you can participate fully even if non-pro.
It's really all about making it harder to harass and stalk people.
@ceorl that's great. No more spammy DMs, unlike the bird turd site.
@Melissa_scahffer @JeniRizio
The best way to start communicating with other users is to join in one of their discussions. It's not like Twitter where people just post solely to promote their business, though users who participate in the community may also mention their businesses.
@Melissa_scahffer @JeniRizio Hi. If I may, direct messaging is for Pro members by design. This helps cut down on receiving unwanted messages. Glad you're here.
