Ok, so I may need some job advice. I am medically transitioning but not out socially yet. Hoping to begin social transition within a few months.
I need to update my resume but am conflicted. I want to tell prospective employers that I'm trans, but should I have my fem name on the resume, my soon to be dead name, or a combination of both when applying.
I haven't legally changed any documents either. Hoping to start that in early 2023.
@MarvelousMadi13 Is your deadname still your legal name?
@researchbuzz unfortunately yes
@MarvelousMadi13 Ok. May I give you a little advice from the perspective of a hiring manager?
@researchbuzz I am always open to advice
@MarvelousMadi13 Your legal name is really important because employers have to do things like verify your citizenship.
From a manager perspective, I feel like you need to make your name change a priority. It's either that or you have to have an awkward conversation and they have to use your deadname to verify you.
This isn't because you're trans but because people try the stupidest shit on their resumes and you have to check everything.
@researchbuzz right now I have it listed with my dead name first, then underneath a preferred name. Unfortunately I can't change my name until after my divorce is final so that hinders me a bit
@MarvelousMadi13 Oh UGH. I'm so sorry.
In that case, PUT YOUR REAL NAME FIRST, and then add ("Legal name x pending change.")
Do not give HR or ANYBODY a reason to "mistake" which name you want.
Day ONE you are Marvelous Madi and that old name is just a little speedbump in need of a bit of bureaucratic attention.
@researchbuzz I like that, I was thinking of something similar but that is better. Thanks for the help!!!
@researchbuzz Now the question is do I go to an interview as Madison or my deadname, again haven't socially transitioned yet
@researchbuzz yeah that's true, just get nervous because a lot of companies seem to not want to hire transgender people
@MarvelousMadi13 I feel you. 80% of autistic adults are unemployed or underemployed and it's not because we're lazy.
But I guarantee you, there is a Madison-sized space out there in a terrific company. And you should not hide your light.
@MarvelousMadi13 You go as Madison, because if people have a problem with who you are, you don't want to work there!
