it was not a Lakota ceremony. The people were not even Lakota. They did this away from the people. And against a judge's order but it was too late. It had been destroyed.

This appears to be an unusual case. But, it highlights what goes wrong when given to the wrong people. Such errors would be prevented if what is Lakota was returned to Lakota spiritual leaders. In this way everyone can be in agreement that proper proceedings will be handled in respectful time honored traditional ways.
@MagnetoMancer Believe it or not, it is not an unusual case.. except for perhaps the bit about the lock of hair. The Crazy Horse family has dealt with it. The Sitting Bull family has dealt with it. The Geronimo family has dealt with it and even Pocahontas' descendants have dealt with it. And those are just the cases I am aware of. But yes.. the belongings should have been returned to the proper descendants in the first place and not someone who worked for the government at the time.

Yes, it was that specific case that you posted that I am talking about. We agree this can be prevented by focusing on codifying and enforcing the respectful returning of articles and remains to the proper Lakota authorities.
I do not know of any other way of preventing the former cases except by constantly educating kids in public schools and popular media like this one. In this way the things that are important to the Lakota will become important to others.
