2/2
Looking around the very near sold out crowd, I was very happy to see a LOT of younger people. Like, millennial young. And, a large percentage of them were NOT dudes. Right behind us, there was an entire cluster of young women who knew all the words and where all the subtleties were. They were Crimson fans. And all around us old, jaded fucks, there was this wave of young people, grooving to some very challenging and avant-garde rock from 40 years ago. It was spiritual.

An observation 1/2
Went to see BEAT last night. This is basically Belew/Levin half of the 80s King Crimson with Steve Vai and Danny Carey playing most of the 80s KC catalog. Now, when you hear about a KC show you automatically think its gonna be a crowd of guys between 40 and 80 years old seated quietly for two hours while the band plays. Let me say, wow.... The crowd was raucous and enthused throughout, giving five long standing ovations and REACTING to the band's musicianship.
I think this pretty much sums it up.

As usual, here is the blog version of Radio Free California Episode 2444, which includes the same playlist but also programming notes about various shows on my internet radio station, my own opinions in very unclean language (TDLR: Nazi = bad), cheap shots at the day's news and more. Enjoy!

Wow I was just pondering this. All NBA games on certain streaming services are now sponsored by and branded with Fan Duel. Its actually called "the Fan Duel Network" so gambling is now embedded within the sport and consumed by it's largest audience (TV watchers). But its nice that they flash the "help" numbers on the screen for a few seconds eh? You're not gonna get your legs broken by a bookie, but can still lose everything, and if you do, call this number for "help".
The people of Ohio decided. The state’s AG said he wouldn’t honor their decision. A judge just told him to piss off.
🎧 The Residents, "Demons Dance Alone". There have probably been more adjectives used to describe this "band" than any other. An acquired taste for sure. Conceptually there isn't any artist that comes close to what these guys have done. DDA was the Res' emotional response to 9/11, instead of reacting to the geo-political results, they made an album that reflects emotional responses after a "mechanized slaughter". It's one of their most listenable records.
Yeah....that anxiety is starting to kick in for sure. Remembering how we sat our kids down after election day in 2016 and told them how the country was going to change, how they were going to hear "a whole lot of ugly comin' at you from a never-ending parade of stupid." But that they were going to have to be resilient and stay true to the things THEY believed, defend their friends, defend their values. I don't know what the fuck we're gonna tell them this time.. "Pack your bags"??
🎧 Dada, "Dada"
This LA band put out a string of powerful records in the 90s, ginned up by some of the tightest harmonies since a certain other southern cal band, and the ri-DONK-ulous guitar playing of Michael Gurley. Another band that really should have been famous, but I'm kind of glad they weren't. They didn't compromise, they kept the songs close to the heart, and the arrangements crisp. They didn't make a bad record. Long live Dada.
New strategy for the Dodgers. Intentionally walk the first three Mets hitters. They are complete shit with the bases loaded. #baseball
