🎧 Brother Bird, "Another Year". Caroline Swon was 17 in 2011 when she posted a cover of Manchester Orchestra's "Deer". Andy Hull's (MO lead singer) mom saw it and sent it to her son. He extended an invitation to collaborate and so began her journey. Debut album dropped today, a delicate progressive alt-folk record with great promise for this artist's future. What's she been doing for the last 13 years? Give this one a whirl when the house is quiet.

EP32 of my indie music podcast is available on all streaming services and directly at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten

It's a good one! 10 brand new tracks from some amazing bands new and not so new. And we talk about "musical states of mind" and how it impacts what we like and when we like it. Give us a listen, and thank you in advance.

🎧 betcover!! "馬" (Horse). Japanese art-punk injected with uptempo lounge-jazz? Sure, why the くそ not.

🎧 Equal Creatures, “Everything That Hurts”. I was “off world” for a few days but when I came back this was the first thing I listened to. As debut albums go it’s a master class. Atlanta, I hope you know how good you have it, to have this band in your scene. Southern indie rock with a social conscience, rattling guitars, rumbling bass, and Laurie Ray laying it out there. The whole thing just screams “roll down the windows”. I love this fucking band.

🎧 Hurray For The Riff Raff, “The Past Is Still Alive”. Alynda Sergarra re-invents her music, again. The songs are awesome. Gorgeous desert Americana and lyrics that address this very difficult moment. Bonus: it glows in the dark!

Here's a few of today's new releases that are currently rocking "The Big-Loo" (that's my eternally COLD studio)

-Hurray For The Riff Raff, "The Past is Still Alive" LP
-Hana Eid, "I Exist Because You Say So" EP
-King Isis, "Monki" single
-Teens in Trouble, "It's Up To Me" single
-Mega Mango, "On The Line" single

Happy to all! There's a new episode of my indie rock podcast "Let's Play Ten" streaming on all services and at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten and it's boiling over with your new favorite bands. Give it a listen and if you hear something you like we give you all the info you need to support the artists. Hope you enjoy!

🎧 The Residents, "Secret Show". In January 23, ahead of their 50th anniversary tour, the godfathers of "weirdo" music took to the stage in their hometown of San Francisco to perform a set of "hits", assisted by guest performers including Les Claypool, Josh Freese, and a 30 strong mens a capella choir. Without the visuals, any Residents live recording loses some its charm, but its always good to hear them re-inventing their songs....again.

New releases today from Middle Kids and Danielle Durack currently filling the space.

Also - and I'm aware people are getting annoyed with my fervor over this band, but listen to anything you can find by a band from Hong Kong called Teenage Riot. Holy shit.

🎧 The Pineapple Thief, "It Leads To This". Album #16 for the veteran British art-proggers. If you dig "Stupid Dream"-era Porcupine Tree, Airbag, or Gazpacho you will certainly appreciate this. Gavin Harrison's unmistakeable drums keep things tight on an octet of "fat-free" songs full of melody and introspection, with some of Bruce Soord's most penetrable lyrics.

🎧 Fool of Stars, "The Everything Under Your Feet". Holy moly is this a solid debut! I had high expectations for this band and they did not disappoint. Another band that is re-defining shoegaze/dreampop for the better. Big songs evolve into majestic cinematic riffs, underlined by synths right out of the 80''s goth-pop playbook. The epic title track, all 9+ minutes of it, is especially outstanding. Do yourself a favor, it's out today. Trust me.

🎧 Madi Diaz, "Weird Faith". The very first lyric on this album is "what the fuck do you want?". It gets brutally honest and bare from then on. Every song just seeps into the worst part of break-ups and rebounds. Great duet with Kasey Musgraves on "Don't Do Me Good." It's a natural progression from 2021's "History of a Feeling". Folky and dark, not a lot fucks given, but plenty spoken.

EP30 of the "Let's Play Ten" podcast spans the globe to bring you new indie/DIY music from your new favorite bands. We're going to Kiev, Hong Kong, Scotland, New Zealand, Santa Cruz, NYC, Atlanta, Guanajuato, Lake Tahoe and Melbourne. We're exhausted! We're also talking about deluxe boxed sets and whether the ephemera, not the music, is the selling point. Give us a tumble on all the streamers or at 40ficreations.com/letsplayten. Thank you!

There's a band out of Kiev called Bah-Bah Genesis. They have only one song out and it's one of best things I've heard in years from a "new" band. We've been exchanging pleasantries and info via dms on IG. And they were nice enough to shout me out on an IG story. Let me repeat they are from Kiev. Their country is two years into a war for it's existence. Yet they persist. Making music. Playing shows. Talking to American podcasters. That's the power of music. Their single is "Confession"

It's and friday! Here's what I am spinning this morning.

Plantoid, "Terrapath" (indie rock-prog fusion)

Parallel Park, "Growing Taller" (indie rock-pop)

Equal Creatures, "Checjk Engine Light/Waylon" (new single - FYI their bass player is the offspring of our own @WuzzaDiva)

🎧 Fugazi, "Repeater". As a teen I was so far up my ass with prog, no other music really existed. I would see the 2nd gen of punks skulking around the East Village and thought they were fashion victims. I was their age, but I couldn't muster up that much anger. So a lot of their music went right by me. I missed most of the 80's underground scene because I was a snob. Eventually I caught up with it and of course this album was part of my musical growth.

🎧 Sleater-Kinney, “Little Rope”. Veteran bands make their best “latter day” music when they have something to prove or they are processing grief. SK is doing both. SK already had the songs ready to go to prove “Path of Wellness” wasn't a fluke. Then, Carrie Brownsteins parents died and the recording sessions got intense. SK albums are always rife with “moments” but this one is one long 36 minute moment. They should name a fine wine after this band.
