๐ŸŽง Oscar Peterson Trio. "Night Train". I'm reading Geddy Lee's autobio and he mentions that one of his good friends in high school was Oscar Peterson Jr. So why not spin some "good jazz" today? Do I really need a reason? Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen on bass and drums provide the bop on the ten covers and one original. Call me a cab, Lamarr, I'm going to the Blue Spot.

๐ŸŽง The Allman Brother Band, "At Fillmore East". I guess I am "road testing" my new space today, playing some overly familiar records to see how they sound in here. Man...this album. My older brother is a Duane/Dickey FANATIC and he learned to play guitar mostly from this record. At one point, there were 5 copies of it in our house because he had played them so incessantly. It's ingrained in my DNA, and I love the music and the memories it brings back.

๐ŸŽง Pink Floyd, "Meddle". Before Roger Waters asserted emotional and contextual control over PF, they made albums like this. Collaborative, experimental, and truly progressive music for the first stoner generation. IMHO, they never made anything as menacing as "One Of These Days" again ("Sheep" not withstanding) or as full-flower beautiful as "Echoes." I wonder if anyone who heard this in 1971 had any idea what was coming next.

๐ŸŽง Nailah Hunter, "Lovegaze". It's and this album is currently filling my studio with big waves of mystically infused alt-folk. It's a really gorgeous record, the music swells and recoils under Hunter's clear and vulnerable vocals. Perfect for the gloomy and rainy day we are having here.

๐ŸŽง Bodega, "Broken Equipment". Discovered this band yesterday. If I had to pick a "New York-iest" band it would be Bodega. This album is actually a little bit of a commentary on NYC, made bitter by the T***p years and Covid, and reflecting on its history and impact on its denizens ("Doers" could be the Gen Z "New York New York"). It's a great modern art punk/new wave album. Looking forward to the new album in April.

๐ŸŽง Benjamin Britten & London Symphony Orchestra, "War Requiem". Thanks and shoutout to @voltronic for the rec of this outstanding remaster of the 1963 recording. It's a powerful, large scale work that never loses it's relevance. Days like this I wish I had larger speakers!

๐ŸŽง Sprints, "Letters to Self". I am attending the virtual pre-release listening party for this album right now - and damn is it good. A sweaty, raucous rager of an album. It's only Jan 4 and already I've got my first AOTY candidate. Album drops tomorrow (Bandcamp Friday!)

๐ŸŽง Still jumping the genre hurdles.

-Billy Cobham, "Life and Times" (w/Allan Zavod and John Scofield...damn)
-The Antlers, "Burst Apart" (try NOT to weep to this record)
-Pet Fox, "Audiotree Live"

๐ŸŽง Kind of all over the place stylistically today.

-Anekdoten, "From Within" (Swedish prog)
-Claudia Thompson w/Barney Kessel, "Goodbye to Love" (mid-century jazz/lounge vocal)
-Rainer Maria, "S/T" (90's NYC indie-rock)

๐ŸŽง Genesis, (Playlist 1). Today is gift-wrapping day! I've estimated about three hours to get it all done and I needed music that makes me happy. Genesis still makes me sing along and air drum. I have two 100 minute playlists to get me thru!

๐ŸŽง Foxing, "Nearer My God". FINALLY got to see them live the other night after missing them twice in three years. They did not disappoint. FOXING is the gold standard for arty indie post rock. With occasional forays into screamo, their music never devolves into anything repellent even if that's not your bag, they always bring it back to something beautiful. Their music is enveloping and emotional. Any of their records are good starting points.

Crossed one off the bucket list last night! The incredible FOXING at the HiFi in Indy. Been waiting years to see them. We caught them on the final night of their โ€œAlbatross 10th Anniversaryโ€ tour. Bonus, opening act Stay Outside absolutely killed. Great night of live rock and roll. Observation from my wife: โ€œporn stache is the new man bun.โ€

๐ŸŽง Genya Ravan, "Urban Desire". This is how things go. I have a poster from a show I hosted in 2013 which featured Cheetah Chrome (Dead Boys). Then I'm "thinking wow I haven't listened to Dead Boys in forever". I put on "Young Loud and Snotty" and I couldn't remember who produced it. It was Genya Ravan, who had a career of her own in the 60's and 70's. So now I'm listening to her brilliant 1978 release. It's a great garage pop record. Totally new to me. That's how things go.

๐ŸŽง Echolyn, "I Heard You Listening". PA prog-band's last release, from 2015. Loved this band since discovering their
"As The World" cd by accident in a Sam Goody in 1995. Complex arrangements, multi-part harmonies, and Ray Weston's lyrics that come from some dark places. None of the musical histrionics that plague a lot of their contemporaries. Echolyn was/is truly a great neo-prog band.

๐ŸŽง Marillion, "Seasons End". About a week after I "discovered" Marillion, news had broke that lead singer Fish had left the band. So when this album came out a few years later I had been firmly in "Camp Fish" for some time - and didn't expect the new guy to fill his shoes. But Steve Hogarth is a great prog singer/lyricist, and though the band re-thought its approach over the course of the next few records, this is a great introduction to Marillion 2.0.
