π§ The Kinks, "Kink Kronikles". I wore this thing out when I had it on vinyl, it was my window into the world of the early Kinks. An amazing collection of non-album singles and deeper tracks from the Reprise Records era, compiled and annotated by rock critic John Mendelsohn, who put as much love into the liner notes as he did the track selection. Although it was just a way to make $ from the catalog, it remains one of my favorite Kinks albums.
π§ RUSH, "Red Stars (Playlist)". After talking with my fellow RUSH fans @Mfieck @BarnabasCollins earlier this week, I am going off-book for a bit and rocking one of my three RUSH playlists. Comprised mostly of latter day tracks, these songs still hit me in the musical and emotional feels. Peart was one my musical heroes, and I studied Geddy's bass lines for endless hours. I will never not have RUSH in my life.
π§ Subsonic Eye, "Nature of Things". Indie pop from Singapore. This album was recorded with all instruments tuned to A432 ( as opposed to the standard A440 ) because that is the frequency at which the natural world, including our bodies and DNA, resonates. So you might have to tune down a bit to learn these songs. I have a real soft spot for this band, they really resonate with me. See what I did there? It's a fun listen, upbeat and crisp.
π§ Nate Smith, " Kinfolk 2: See The Birds " I'm a bassist/guitarist which also makes me a frustrated drummer, so when I heard Nate Smith on NPR's jazz show this w/e of course I was intrigued. There is no adjective to describe this guy's drumming. The way he combines meters so effortlessly, playing ahead and behind, it's all so fluid. His compositions have a lot of range too, and the album as a whole is a seminar in current jazz and fusion styles.
π§ EVV. Currently spinning her entire catalog, which is about an albums worth of singles released over the last few years. This Minneapolis based artist puts the "V" in Vocalist. She moves from hard blues to a sultry and organic R&B/Folk amalgam. Check her out. These are some major Friday night jams. Don't forget it's Bandcamp Friday!
Don't forget today is Bandcamp Friday so all proceeds go to the artists as BC waives their share. Every first Friday of the month! If you're looking for some new rock and roll to buy, check out my podcast " Lets Play Ten " at
Just a reminder that Friday (tmw) is Bandcamp Friday. BC waives their revenue share and all proceeds go to the artists. Head over and buy something tomorrow! Indie musicians need stuff!
π§ Pastor TL Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir, " Like A Ship ". An uplifting and raucous mix of Chicago gospel and soul music. The YCC is backed by a killer band that had to have been sent by you know who. Richard Evans bass lines, placed right where they should be, should be part of any new bassist's study. I read that this was one of the most sampled albums ever.

π§ Airbag, " All Rights Removed ". If you're a fan of 70's and post-Waters era Floyd then Airbag is for you. Every one of their records is a no-skip delight of floating rhythms, airy keyboards, and soaring guitar solos.
YES, Drama. Oh how we scoffed back in 1980 when we heard that the Buggles had replaced Anderson and Wakeman in YES. We said things like yeah, video killed the prog star. But then the album came out and it was some of the heaviest prog the band had ever made, and also it most accessible without sacrificing any complexities (that would come later). This is everybody's secret favorite YES album. #cosomusic #MPNP

New episode of my indie rock podcast is up! Ten brand new songs from small label/DIY/indie artists. Plus, me and Ben from @40Ficreations discuss the "blue elephant" in the room and consider alternatives for artists that depend on social media to find and engage with fans. π§ Melody Gardot, "Worrisome Heart". Gardot was critically injured at age 19 and she spent a year having to re-learn EVERYTHING. Her doctor suggested music therapy to help recover brain function. She began writing songs and developed a jazz-blues-torch song style and it sounds like she had been doing it for a lifetime. Her debut is a musical cocktail that goes down very smooth. It is a testament to both her and the power of music.
π§ KISS, "KISS". I know, I am laughing at myself too. The silliest band to ever exist, for sure. For those of us that came of age in the 70's, KISS was inevitable. I went through a short phase in 77-78 and then moved on. But the first side of this debut contains 4 of their most iconic songs. Dripping with misogyny, this music is cringey to me now. 12 year old me had no idea. Apologies to my parents and our neighbors for the late night listening parties. #cosomusic #MPNP
π§ Suki Waterhouse, "Milk Teeth". This is actually the first time I have given this artist a "good listen" and I really dig what's she's doing. Yeah, it's alt-pop made by an "actress/model/influencer" but it's got a no-bullshit attitude and SW has a keen way with the right words, "That's what happens when you believe delusions/A broken heart is a fucking nuisance". That works for me.
π§ Jethro Tull, "A Passion Play". With a shout-out to my boys @Meekspees and @stueytheround and all the Tull fans out there. 1973's confounding concept record, rescued from a series of disastrous French recording sessions, some of which went on to become War Child. Musically it's a step back from Thick as a Brick, but it set the stage for the mid-70's medieval folk -rock era of Tull. Complicated, confusing, complex, and outstanding.

π§ Emily Wells and Dan the Automator, "Pillowfight". Damn, this is one sexy album. Musical shapeshifter Wells 2013 collab with DTA was like nothing Wells had done before or has done since. If you stripped the thousands of layers of guitar from the first Garbage album and added a coat of R&B, you might have the wire frame for this record. Freaking delicious. #cosomusic #MPNP
π§ Fela Kuti & Afrika 70, "Gentleman". I love the way Fela pauses the introductory groove for an unaccompanied sax solo before laying down a completely new groove, and then solos over that. His mockery of his countrymen giving in to imperialist customs is particularly venomous on this record. Three very fine tracks, an excellent introduction to a legendary musician's vast catalog. #cosomusic #MPNP
π§ The Who, "Face Dances". Is this the worst Who album? Maybe not, but certainly the most "un-Who" record in their catalog. But, for sentimentality's sake I am giving a long overdue spin. I was such a fanatical and unreasonable Who fan as a teen I refused to own up to how anemic this record really was. I rarely ever listen to The Who these days....I guess we've grown apart π€£ #cosomusic #MPNP
π§ Billy Cobham, "Spectrum". If Billy Cobham was standing in an empty room with his hands in his pockets just silently "thinking" about music, he would have my full attention. With Jan Hammer, Tommy Bolin, and Lee Sklar on board, this 1973 release was one of the best records in the first wave of fusion. #cosomusic #MPNP
π§ Casper Skulls, "Knows No Kindness". 2021 release from Toronto-based indie-rock quartet. Great night-time road trip listening. They just put out a new single which has some major Neko Case vibes.
