Watched the Simone Biles doc last night, which chronicles her struggle to overcome - among other things - "the twisties" that forced her to pull out of Tokyo. There are many revelations about gymnastics in general i.e. the military-minded training process of the Karolyi era (no talking, no laughing, no goofing around) and the almost complete disregard for the fragility of the teenage body and mind. Our daughter withdrew from USAG last year in part because of these tactics. 1/2

Her coaches still approach training that way (we've heard of several girls dropping out after over-training - a former teammate of DD withdrew permanently last week after fracturing her back). If you've got kids in organized sanctioned athletics, stay vigilant and don't be afraid to ask questions regardless of being told to "let the coaches coach". Simone Biles came back on her own terms, we need to let our kids set the pace of their success. 2/2
