There are two kinds of people in the world. People who think Capt. Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica" is a masterpiece of incalculable genius, misunderstood by simpletons due to it's immeasurable complexity, and people who think it is unlistenable dogshit, elevated well above it's station to mythological status by people who "get it".
@Charles_Hawtrey
About every two years or so I try, I REALLY try, to at the very least develop an appreciation for that record and I just can't. I love weirdo music, I listen to the Residents and Circus Contraption and The Tigerlillies. I can't put my finger on what it is about that record that just repulses me. It's my white whale.
Have you tried it in small doses? It's not something I out on every day that's for sure. I just kind of marvel that it was supposed to have been written beforehand or something like that.
Check out those Joe Maphis and Larry Collins videos I put in?
@Charles_Hawtrey Man, I have tried EVERYTHING. I have friends who swear by that record, and have suggested all kinds of "ways to listen" including altered states, times of day, specific track re-ordering, segmentation. Just makes it worse! I've even read tons of stuff about it trying to understand it better.
@MPCavalier I like it in measured doses, guess I'm half a simpleton. 🤣
