@MPCavalier I have just asked the question elsewhere but does anyone know if the independent is a party or if you're not registered as a Republican or another party that makes you an independent so to unregister is to be independent right?

"Independent" is a recognized party affiliation, just like the Green Party or the Libertarian party. Bernie Sanders is also an independent.
@MPCavalier so if I understand this correctly you have to be a member of a party to be elected to office that sounds crazy.

Not necessarily, you can run with no party affiliation, as long as you meet the other requirements to hold office.
