Gentle reminder, folks:

While today's news out of Arizona might be "good for mobilizing people for November", it also seriously hurts a lot of people in the interim.

Try to avoid falling prey to the idea that the passage or protection of bad law is something to be addressed on election days alone.

And check in on anyone you know who might be affected by this or related awfulness.

This is one heck of a year in the fight for human dignity, and democracy.

Stay fierce, but also kind.

@MLClark

I'm honestly unclear how recognizing that this is very likely going to help Democrats in November adversely affects anyone.

I'm also unclear how "checking in" with people affected β€” to tell 'em what? "Tough break"? β€” "addresses" a decision by a State Supreme Court.

As nearly as I can see, voting is the only recourse for fixing this. The only body responsible for any "hurt" anyone suffers is the court.

@mcfate

1) Modifiers are important, which is why I used them in my comment. This is not an either/or. While X, also Y.

2) If you're not aware of how people check in with people affected by abortion bans, that's okay - there are plenty of others who know how to touch base and make sure that their feminized friends in US states are aware of options and organizations they can turn to for help.

3) Voting is important. Direct democratic pressure can also be employed year round.

@MLClark

At this point, I haven't got a single clue what you're expecting people to be doing in response in the meantime, except maybe to make themselves feel rotten on someone else's behalf.

"except maybe to make themselves feel rotten on someone else's behalf"

Again, if you're not aware how to inform people who can get pregnant in shitty US states of their options under these circumstances, that's fine. There are plenty of us who do.

And if direct democracy outside of voting days is also something you don't do, that's also fine - there are plenty who do.

We all play to our strengths, and there are many ways to be good, pro-democratic civic participants.

@MLClark

Well, if there are plenty of you who do "know", then I have no idea why you're spending your time scolding people for noting that, at a somewhat more elevated level of consideration, this isn't without some silver lining.

That is, after all, what you chose to LEAD with.

Go and inform some pregnant people or something. Getting fussy on social media isn't "informing" anyone of anything you want them to be "informed" of.

@MLClark

Oh, come ON. If you can't recognize your own tone, don't blame it on people who can.

Feel free to spare me the cheap "if you're not aware" condescension while you're at it.

@mcfate

Considering the fact that plenty of people read the post very differently, you might want to consider that your interpretation of tone isn't an objective truth. It's just, like, your opinion, man.

Have a good one, McFate.

@MLClark

Kind of like your opinions, you mean?

There are not "plenty of people" responding to your post. Just me, basically.

@mcfate

"Kind of like your opinions, you mean?"

100%. That's how social media works. :) I post thoughts. Others post thoughts. Discourse ensues.

And I never said others were responding to the post specifically in comments. You can tell from the signal-boosts and likes that it gained in short order that others read it differently.

You just really don't seem to like me saying anything online in relation to US politics, and that's fine. You're more than entitled to your opinion. Cheers.

@MLClark

I don't need your permission or approval, and I find your passive-aggression increasingly tiresome.
