They're also concretely value-stripping preceding algorithms. Google was originally excellent at providing answers to our prompts - by directing people to human-curated sites *with* the answers.
Then it gave top response priority to people who paid for ads. Now it (and other search engines) just give synthesized answers absent verification, or direct users to promo pages with content generated by LLMs.
We *started* with what this whole hype cycle is promising as an end result.
@MLClark Im old enough to remember the dotcom bubble and crash, where something that had potential to be good was overhyped to make more and more $ so this reminds me of that.
And this part made me LOL:
Instead of an infinite number of monkeys with infinite number of typewriters. They are using one monkey with a banana under the keyboard and calling anything it types Shakespeare
And they're currently in talks with a taxidermist to see if they can swap out that one last monkey for a stuffie, too!

@MLClark If your business model is to make something fake, but it only works if you keep creating more real stuff to feed into it, maybe you should just make the real stuff in the first place.
These AIs aren't being created by these giants to create anything or make anything better. They are created to suck up as much as possible and create another layer they control where wealth can be extracted.
It's not a way to "generate" anything. It's a way to steal what others make.
