This reminds me of a song called River God by Nichole Nordeman which is about *us* having our sharp edges smoothed away over time.
I wonder if she read the poem.

Oh, you've hit me in my soft spot, Stuey. I love a good "take me to the river" song, and any similar use of the metaphor. There's something deep and primal about water and our ache for cleansing, no?
