Yes, it's part Dostoevsky-in-space. But it's also inspired by Star Trek - at least, in franchise formations appealing to the construction of a better society.

Trek talk! There was *so* much in that, but somehow, I feel compelled to ... launch a minor defence of Enterprise! 😂 😂 😂
Sure, it's at the rock bottom of my Trek list, but I think Carbon Creek is delightful, and any episode featuring Phlox, esp.The Breach, A Night in Sickbay, and the ethically dubious Dear Doctor, is def worth watching. I also like Hoshi as a translator before the universal translator takes over! 🚀
