Up until a few years ago, this lion man sculpture was the oldest known example of figurative art, dating back 38,000 years. Recent discoveries in Sumatra push that date back another 13,000 years.

I bet a lot of early figurative art was wood-based and not preserved at all. I am speculating, of course, but it would make sense, and I bet some of it was really awful too /lol
