There has always been some of that "power for power's sake" in both parties, but it was mostly manageable.

I saw it growing within the Republican party and all the talk of a "permanent majority" under Karl Rove, but I never imagined it would metastasize the way that it has after Trump was elected.

It's like 70+% of the Republican party devolved into Gollum from The Lord of the Rings.
