@NiveusLepus I've got "Shaft" in my brainpan.
@LiberalLibrarian @NiveusLepus
Wasn't that the literal definition of squicking back in the day?
@sfleetucker That's what I thought. It was what I found. Oy. @NiveusLepus
Yesterday I learned that sumo wrestlers don't wash their loincloths.
Today, squicking.
It's been... interesting.
@NiveusLepus @LiberalLibrarian
The world is an amazing place full of wonders.
@sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian And also full of moments that require eyebleach.
@LiberalLibrarian @NiveusLepus
Now is probably not a good time to mention goatse then...
@sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian Oh Gods... it's not been long enough since I've last thought of that.
@NiveusLepus @LiberalLibrarian
The old internet wasn't safe either...
@sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian It really was the wild west in some ways. There was a feeling of infinite possibility, and a bit of risk to it.
@sfleetucker Met Mrs.LL on IRC sexchat rooms. @NiveusLepus
@NiveusLepus @LiberalLibrarian
I just used soc.motss and bear codes.
@sfleetucker @NiveusLepus @LiberalLibrarian I've managed to visit that site, (because of course I looked!), without going blind. I did startle a bit.
My spouse has corresponded with the person in that image for years (met them through social connections, not goatse), and says nothing but nice things. When I hear stories about them it's always (firstname) said so and so, not "the dude from goatse".
So it's always so weird to hear strangers talk about them that way. To us, they're (firstname).
@sfleetucker @NiveusLepus @LiberalLibrarian
I mean, you don't make your personal star the star of a site like that and not have yourself b known as "that guy from that site".
I don't think they're offended that they're the "goatse guy", last I heard, so I shan't be offended on their behalf : )
@AskTheDevil @sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian
That's cool! I don't know them, so I'm not certain if this would apply, other than they were the source of *that* image, but in my experience it's the stranger folks that are often among the most kind and welcoming
I say this as someone who is top shelf strange, but hey I find myself in good company
I'll be honest, I found the image shocking, but that's all it was. A sudden visceral reaction to having my homepage changed when I left my pc unlocked.
@NiveusLepus @sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian I would be annoyed if someone changed my home screen at all, much less to something that might shock or offend family or guests in my home that saw it by surprise.
@AskTheDevil @sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian
It was a prank at one of my IT jobs that made its way around the office.
It was how you were taught to lock your device when leaving.
You could get away with a lot more in the Early oughts.
@NiveusLepus @sfleetucker @LiberalLibrarian It's true! They hadn't made rules you couldn't do certain terrible things because we hadn't done them to make rules about yet!
Like how it used to be possible to replace someone's website with "I'm a deadbeat who doesn't pay their website developers".
@LiberalLibrarian @NiveusLepus What really sells it is the wet suctioning sounds.
