There is no education system. People are too stupid

@Kinnison

I've been wrestling with this since Terrible Tuesday. I couldn't understand how anyone listening to the lies trump said could believe him. TARIFFS!?!? I overheard multiple convos like,"Trump's cutting our taxes because he's gonna tariff all the foreigner countries & make them pay to sell to Americans."

Next- "Elon Musk’s ‘crazy’ plan to rip $2 trillion out of America"-people thing this is great- "it will reduce all our prices !"

@Kinnison

If we're honest, in America today, millions of people voted for a "performer" that seemed to razzle dazzle them.

Today's P.T. Barnum.

"I am a showman by profession ... and all the gilding shall make nothing else of me."

According to Barnum's critics, his personal aim was "to put money in his own coffers".

He didn't actually say, "there's a sucker born every minute" but it's a fitting adage for trump ethics.

@Kinnison

What happened to CIVICS- learning in school the basics of how our govt works. So I went looking for an answer.

"Democracy has to be born anew every generation, and education is the midwife."
- John Dewey

Knowledge about the ideas embodied in the Constitution and the ways in which it shapes our lives is not passed down from generation to generation through the gene pool; it must be learned anew by each generation.

- Justice Sandra Day O'Conner

@Kinnison

When and Why Did America Stop Teaching Civics?

KEY FINDINGS

The time devoted to civic education in American public schools began to significantly decline in the 1960s.

Civic education has not for many decades been prioritized by federal or state government]

The time spent in schools on civics declines when civic education itself is seen as controversial.

PLEASE check out the Policy Brief on Civics- just put out and solid actions to take.

@QueenOfEverything @Kinnison

Yeah. About the time high school and college students started protesting against Vietnam and for Civil Rights.

The powers that be decided that maybe teaching them Civics was a bad idea so that stopped happening.

Some individual schools still did but most of them had given it up entirely by the '80s.

@Tarnagh @Kinnison

That's what really surprised me in this report. The huge drop in Civics happened in the 60s... so that's how we've gotten the voting population we have today.

Half the people in the US could not name the three branches of government

One in four cannot name one of the 5 basic freedoms in the 1st amendment.

maybe everyone who wants to vote should have to take a basic citizenship test?

@Kinnison @QueenOfEverything

IF it is given free, so there's no claim of it being a "poll tax," I'd be okay with that.

In addition, anyone running for public office should be required to pass a citizenship test.
