@Kinnison Interesting which military he chooses to respect.
@Kinnison For non-military people -- a salute signifies respect, but in neither above example is a salute required. If you're not in uniform, or a salute would be impractical (for example you're using both hands to carry something), no salute is expected. Both Obama and Bush were awkwardly showing respect where no salute is required.
