There’s a storm coming. We all know it. And yet Americans are pretending that everything is normal.
We are going to be confronted with an existential crisis eleven months from now. And the majority of Americans don’t care

@Superstitionsee I've thought about becoming an ex-pat. Are you having to travel far or just over the border?
@Jezibaba No, flying to Central America (Costa Rica). Leaving the cold of Ohio for 6 months a year, and coming back home for the summers, but who knows. That could change depending on what chaos might await us here.
@Superstitionsee @Jezibaba Agreed. It's been making me crazy, too, for about 8 years now. There was a very brief abatement of anxiety two years ago, but now it's all back. SO TIRED of the Cassandra-esque feeling when I try to convey where I think we are headed to certain family and friends.
MAKE IT STOP. VOTE.
Which country, if you care to share? I've been thinking the same thing.
@KGinKS @Jezibaba The plan right now is half a year in Costa Rica and half in the states, but if it gets too nuts here, we’ll have a soft place to land.
Overall, the people are wonderful, warm and friendly with everyone. Very family oriented.
And the nature is incredible (11 different microclimates!), the food is simple, fresh and healthy.
The rest of my life is only getting shorter, so I want to be someplace warm and peaceful, with monkeys in the trees, and macaws in the sky.
We found it!
@Superstitionsee @KGinKS @Jezibaba
I’m jealous.
Thanks for sharing. I hope it doesn't come to fleeing the country for me. But I want to be prepared.
For whoever has yet to read the Kagan WaPo piece, here ya go. Free —
@InUnfunky Thank you!
@InUnfunky @Jezibaba Thanks!
@InUnfunky @Jezibaba Thanks for sharing.
I’m not nearly as pessimistic as this piece. I still believe there are enough guard rails in place to keep powers in check. I also believe, based on this latest local and state elections, that we will vote and win again.
Then again, I have privilege coming out of my wazoo, so I’m likely wrong. I live in a place where I support every elected official of mine down to Dog Catcher. I don’t know hurt and pain going on most everywhere else.
Scary.
You're welcome!
I have 9 more WaPo freebies this month and 10 NYT so watch out.
😎
I have some quibbles with Kagan's piece but otherwise felt like it was a powerful argument based in history, our current sociopolitical miasma, and a study of the very observable "will to deceive/believe," i.e. the Republican cult and their total devolution. Kagan is no raving lunatic; I bet he has a "Brookings Inst. 4-EVURR" tattoo.
My predix? Not sharing unless by DM. 🤔 🤷♂️ 🤓
@InUnfunky @mikeharmanos @Jezibaba
I do feel there is a slumbering march toward something not democratic unless there is a huge wake-up call and turnout, even more than last time. but it feels like there is not that much organizing happening to defend democracy. people talking about it, which is better than nothing, but that’s not enough.
@InUnfunky @Jezibaba Go right ahead - share away
Heh, nice try.
Not right now; listening to a Dead show and drinking some beers.
Maybe later.
😎
What year and where??
Ha! That, Jezi, I will answer...😆

Thank you! 🐻
@Jezibaba I agree. And the anxiety and potential heart break is making me crazy. We’re retired, and extremely fortunate to be building a small house in another country right now, which should be ready in time for the election. We’re doing our part and then voting, then getting the hell out of Dodge for a while.
