I love that they are explaining the mechanics of how our elections work. States generally give their electoral votes to the person who wins the popular vote in the states (although some states are trying to change that now).

HCR

What does it mean that "our institutions held"? The people in local offices did the right thing. But that's no longer true. Look at New Mexico officials refusing to certify the recent election.

HCR

NM official who participated in January 6 insurrection refused to certify based on "his gut feeling." There goes the system that "held" in 2020.

HCR

The Big Lie is corrupting our democratic institutions. The threat is on-going.

HCR

Representative Adam Schiff (D-CA) will run today's proceedings.

HCR

The effort to overturn the election at the state level is serious, all of it aimed at January 6.

HCR

When you hear tapes, remember Trump knew his allegations were nonsense.

HCR

(Editorial: His MO was always to assert nonsense to lay groundwork for what he was going to do anyway. See
@jeffpearlman
on his football antics.)

HCR

Reiterating that Trump knew full well there was no evidence that the election was fraudulent.

(Editorial: Did the Stepiens ever have their baby?)

HCR

Gabriel Sterling's furious press conference. Sigh. Now that violence has been mainstreamed.

HCR

Cheney begs people to listen to the evidence, not to divide along political lines.

HCR

Schiff is up. Reiterates that Trump lost, but fought to hold onto power, by stopping the vote count, stopping states from certifying the election by filing frivolous lawsuits. Then threatened state legislators to back him.

HCR

Wanted states to send two slates of electors so Pence could count them in. When legislators wouldn't, did a sham process they sent in to Congress anyway.

HCR

Likely conspiracy to defraud the United States.

HCR

Trump targeted not just Pence, but every level of our elections. Needed those state slates so Pence could count them in. All of it based in a lie. Barr said "bullshit."

HCR

The Big Lie is "a dangerous cancer on the body politic." Leaves us with nothing but violence to settle elections.

HCR

Dangerous and escalating pressure on elections officials, including local workers, whose lives were turned upside down.

HCR

Tape of people screaming at local election officials. (Totally scary stuff.) Jocelyn Benson (who is totally cool, from all I can see) tells the story of her experience, not knowing if she and her kids were safe.

HCR

Trump and Giuliani pressure legislators to count him, rather than Biden, as the legitimate winner, based on fraud.

HCR

Eastman tried to justify this plan in a memo, and also appeared in front of Georgia legislature, telling the members it was their DUTY to shift the state's votes.

HCR

Trump invited delegations to the White House to get them to switch their state's votes. They saw it was illegal and refused.

HCR

Trump constantly insisted that HE, not those following the law, was the one protecting the rule of law.

HCR

Trump put personal information of the legislators he was pressuring into the public sphere to pressure them.

HCR

Targeted calls to state legislators both from lawyers and from Trump himself. (This is bananas.)

HCR

Jenna Ellis and Rudy Giuliani totally worked the phones to try to get the legislators to switch their votes. Giuliani kept calling even when told not to. Pressure.

HCR

Steve Bannon called protesters to the Speaker of the PA House. All of his personal information was put on line.

HCR

Trump campaign spent millions in ads telling people to call their legislators. It grew dangerous. More tapes of mobs calling for arson and murder. Wow. "The punishment for treason is death."

HCR

Today we'll hear from those pressured in AZ and GA about how they were treated and how they responded. The most powerful man in the world sought to cling to power, and took it out on them. They stood for the Constitution.

HCR

Rusty Bowers, R speaker of AZ house of reps. Brad Raffensperger, GA Sec of State. Gabriel Sterling, R GA operations manager for 2020 election. All Republicans.

HCR

Bowers first. Campaigned for Trump in 2020. Wanted him to win. But Biden won the popular vote in AZ.

HCR

Before the hearing, Trump calls Bowers a RINO and references a November 2020 conversation in which Bowers told him the election was rigged and that Trump had won Arizona. Bowers says he had a talk with him, but this statement is false.

HCR

Bowers never said the vote was rigged, or that Trump won.

HCR

Trump and Guiliani called Bowers after the election. Guiliani came on first. Then Trump. Initiated conversation. Bowers asks for evidence of fraud. G said they did have proof. Bowers asked for names of the "illegal immigrants," "dead people."

HCR

G said he would get Bowers the names. Guiliani never produced any evidence.

HCR

They wanted Bowers to allow an official committee to hear the evidence and take action. He refused. Said he didn't want the "circus" in the House. Didn't want to be used as a pawn.

HCR

Second ask: Bowers asked "to what end"? Trump said they had "heard" that there was a legal ability to remove the Biden electors and replace them with his. They want to do that. Bowers says that's nothing he's ever heard.

HCR

Bowers tells Trump that he is asking Bowers to break his oath to the Constitution and to the state. He says he won't do it without deep consultation without attorneys. Bowers says he won't break his oath.

Guiliani would say, "Aren't we all Republicans here? I would think we would get a better reception."

HCR

Bowers says the AZ legislature had a clear law on selecting electors, and it is a fundamental right of the people to choose their lawmakers.

HCR

Bowers, on more than one occasion he was asked to break his oath, but it is a tenet of his faith that the Constitution is divinely inspired. Not going to break his oath to it on a person's request.

HCR

Bowers asked if it had ever been done before. No.

HCR

Later hearing at ballroom in Phoenix was not official, even through they tried to portray it as one. Bowers had denied an "official" hearing.

HCR

Meeting was same day Gov. Doug Ducey certified Biden electors. Bowers met with Guiliani that day. Giuliani continued to say the election was fraudulent. Other Republican AZ lawmakers aggressively questioned Giuliani for proof.

HCR

Giuliani asked Jenna Ellis if they had the proof. She said yes. And Bowers said: Give me the names. They claimed to have all that information, but they hadn't brought it with them.

HCR

Bowers told them they had not produced evidence. Giuliani said they don't have any evidence but they had a lot of theories. Maybe a gaffe? Afterward, Bowers and others kind of laughed about it.

Later, Giuliani said that AZ law let them switch the electors from Biden to Trump and wanted Bowers to do it. Never provided evidence of election fraud that could have changed the vote.

HCR

Committee has found that the protests at statehouses were the same people as later showed up in DC at January 6. One, for example, was Jacob Chansley, (QAnon Shaman). He was at AZ statehouse.

HCR

Also the Proud Boys were there, calling for him by name.

HCR

Trump called again later in December. Bowers said he had voted for him, supported him, but would not break the law for him.

HCR

Eastman called later in the month anyway, asking him to take a vote to decertify the electors because they had plenary authority to do so. (Editorial: this is bonkers.)

HCR

Eastman said they could just... overrule the voters.

HCR

"Just do it and let the courts figure it out." WTAF

HCR

Eastman said "Just do it and let the courts sort it out." Bowers said: You want me to put my state through something novel and likely illegal? Not happening.

HCR

Bowers told Trump he would not do anything illegal for him. Eastman said, do it and let the courts sort it out.

HCR

Bowers. What he wanted was contrary to Constitution of US and state, both.

Andy Biggs also called Bowers. Wanted him to support the decertification of the electors.

HCR

Bowers made a public statement, calling the pressure "breathtaking" and saying "the rule of law forbids us to do that."

HCR

No legal pathway to execute such a request, says Bowers.

@Jezibaba My breath caught when he said that. I hope a whole lot of Evangelicals are listening.

@sanau These hearings are the best thing I've seen politically in decades.
