Hi there, and welcome to this week's episode of:
"I own a business and the only one who will make it move forward is me, but I DO set my own hours and tasks, but I DO have this week marked "off" on my schedule, but..."
You know, as long as we're talking, I may as well tell you all that this was the HARDEST holiday I think I've ever, ever-ever had. (Because death in the family this year, my brother.)
Like, "acute depression" bad. (And also - apparently I can't help myself - I must say that I'm no danger to myself or others. It just sucks horribly, is all.)
@singlemaltgirl Thank you. And, thank you.
@JenniferMcCown Yep. Right there with you.
@iamwill1w9 [looks, bewildered, out into space]
How do we...DO things??
@JenniferMcCown I had to check my work email today for something completely unrelated to work. I tried not to look!
It’s a good thing I did though. A client scheduled a meeting for tomorrow. No no no! I am not working this week!
@JenniferMcCown Think of me as the fellow drunk girl in the bar bathroom who's screaming "DON'T TEXT YOUR EX" from the neighboring stall, lol. Only the business owner edition. 😆
@danialexis Which feels VERY supportive! But also a touch confusing. (Is working "texting my ex"? Is...not working, doing that?)
I love a supportive bathroom stranger tho...
@JenniferMcCown In this case, work will still be there next week. Rest is this week's work. Etc.
@danialexis May all the saints, angels, and little fey half-bird-half-elf people bless you. This is good advice.
@JenniferMcCown Thanks. I literally had to be hospitalized four times for overwork to learn it. So now I happily pass it on for free.
If the calendar says "vacation," you are not "wasting time" or "doing nothing." You are doing vacation. That is today's work.
(Typing this to remind myself again, too.)
@danialexis "Vacation is today's work."
I'm writing that down. I'm so sorry you had to learn it the hard way.
(What's funny is, I'd likely give this same kind of advice if a friend said these things to me. Does it occur to me to say it to me? Nooooo...)
@JenniferMcCown It is precisely that kind of drive that both makes us good at running a business and more likely to burn out. People who give themselves permission to rest have the opposite problem - they're less likely to burn out but also less likely to stay on top of the business.
It's a monkey's paw wish 😆
@danialexis (deep sigh)
Ah, such is life.
@awnaves I'm still trying to figure that out...but it involves doing my favorite activity once a week, at least.
(No, not that. Skiing!)
I absolutely recognize it's a privileged position to be in.
I also recognize how HUGE of a blessing-and-a-curse this is for my ADHD brain.
I'm just saying. Because saying feelings is validating as all heckity.
