Anyone have a suggestion for a game to play until the full BG3 is out? I have played most of the obvious ones, BG1 & 2, NWN1 & 2, DOS2, etc. Is there something relatively new I might have missed? Any suggestions?
You could also try Dragon Age: Ultimate, which GOG sells, DRM-free, and it's usually on at a pretty good price. It's very similar to BG1 / 2, NWN 1 / 2, and other RPGs.
@XaoslordErie I've played those too. In fact played through them several times, even DA2 which is widely disliked (personally I was okay with it). 🤣
@XaoslordErie Of course. I have obviously spent much too much time playing games. It has been a long time since I played Skyrim, though so I may consider downloading it and giving it a new pull-through with new mods.
Of the lot, Skyrim's the one I play most, and while most of my mods are patches and graphic enhancements, I have a lot of new areas, dungeons, and quests, as well. It may seem odd, but one of the first things I do before a game purchase is to assess how robust the mod community is. If it's pretty active, then I will usually give the game a try, at least.
@XaoslordErie You probably know that there are already a lot of mods for BG3 even with it in early release, but I prefer to stick with the vanilla for at least the first play through. I think it is going to have a *lot* of replayability.
@XaoslordErie And for the first time I enjoy playing a paladin, a class I always wanted to like but couldn't.
I ran a Paladin in Diablo II / LoD, but it wasn't as much fun as the Necro or Sorceress. The Necro was and remains my favourite.
@XaoslordErie In 5e, the paladin has been pretty majorly reworked. It is now possibly my favourite class.
Still Lawful Good?
@XaoslordErie Not necessarily. The paladin is much more complex that it used to be. They no longer serve a god but instead are bound by an oath. Breaking the oath does not make them lose Paladin powers but gives them different, less good alined powers.
@XaoslordErie You choose between which oath your paladin should be sworn to. One is fairly traditional lawful good but any paladin has to be careful. Just random slaughter for sure makes you an Oathbreaker Paladin which can be a fun choice.
I should mention, as well, that I played Path of Exile for a while and got up to Act VI before the game went off the rails with events, and I did like it (played 2 chars - a Witch and an Inquisitor), but you have to be online to play it, and I don't like chewing up that kind of bandwidth.
Yes, I've been keeping watch, as I'm waiting for BG3 at this point as well. I'm sure the mod community will explode on NexusGames shortly after it's out, too. The Vortex utility remains my mod installation utility of choice, until something better comes along, and it is updated regularly, in addition to supporting many, many games.
@JRTomlin have you played Planescape: Torment or it's spiritual squeal Torment: Tides of Numenera?
The former being a classic PC RPG using the D&D setting, with the latest version letting you use D&D rules in it. The former is more character & story-choice driven.
@Shadow298 I haven't played numenera. I probably should. Thanks for suggesting it.
@JRTomlin No probs. Hope you have fun with it.
@JRTomlin
Have you tried Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim (SE)? They're older, sure, but pretty good placeholders until BG3 comes around. I've got over 100 mods running concurrently for Skyrim, and that has extended the replay value almost into infinity - and new mods (and patches) come along daily.
