When people say Capitalism is the answer to everything I like to remind them that aspirin is something of a miracle drug but because there is no profit in it it is not being properly studied for all of its potential benefits.
This is an example of why pure Capitalism, like pure Communism, is not a workable idea in the long run. We have never had a true one of either in the world because it’s impossible. Some socialism must be present in capitalism and vice versa, for it to ever really work.
@Iskios Capitalism without regulation forms monopolies. If monopolies exist, the system isn't capitalism. ♾️
@MississippiGoneCoastal Even without monopolies the system falters on the one human trait that continues to plague us, Greed. Even if something is great for all humanity nd can save millions from suffering, it will not be done if it is not hugely profitable. That's an inherent fault in the system itself.
@Iskios That is not inherently and always true. The level of greed required to allow suffering when the means to alleviate it exists is rare. Individuals: run food banks, clean beaches and oceans, protest injustice, recycle, donate, show up in force after storms to help...
@MississippiGoneCoastal That is not quite right. Yes, there are always people who will help, but think about the resources of our society? We have the resources to make sure no one goes hungry, has clean water, and can live in a home, yet we don't do it because it is not profitable. The same is true in medicine. Curing disease is less profitable, so less effort is put into doing it. It isn't an absolutist argument, but a generalized one on our society as a whole.
@Iskios I disagree. Efforts to end homelessness are widespread. You are confusing the efforts of our corporate owned politicians with our society as a whole. Billions go to fund military equipment nobody wants because of corporate lobbyists. Our society is not represented by our government. Democracy has been dead. Democrats hope to revive it. Republicans are nailing the coffin shut.
@MississippiGoneCoastal you still don’t understand my point.
@MississippiGoneCoastal Yeah, you don't. I am not opposed to Capitalism. I am opposed to unrestrained, pure Capitalism. I even used that phrase.
Pure Capitalism is essentially oligarchy, and we cannot allow that to happen to us.
@MississippiGoneCoastal I know. But that is what Republicans and Libertarians are trying to force on America. That’s what all the deregulation is about.
@Iskios There is no such thing as "pure" capitalism. I took economics too. Unrestrained capitalism destroys itself. Capitalism cannot exist unrestrained. That has been known generations before I learned it. Btw my degree is finance. I love to discuss money - less in the material sense and more as in the systems that cause things to be created.
