Who was the last Republican President to win the popular vote as well as the electoral college.
Probably George Bush Senior. And that was a long time ago. That should tell us something about the actual makeup of American society.
How have we allowed the electoral college to ruin America like this?
@Ironworker229 @Iskios And from what I understand when a constitutional convention is called, EVERYTHING is up for revision -- not just the electoral college. You're right. We probably want to avoid opening that can of worms.
@n8evans I understand that is correct and I am very concerned about it. Const Conv has always been thrown around in the libertarian circles (I am a reformed libertarian these past 15 years Sorry, white guy of a certain age). Everything would be on the table, including...The Bill Of Rights! Not willing to gamble that unless and until there is a very strong majority in favor of progressive ideals.
@Ironworker229 I am not a lawyer, so bare with me. The Constitution says that the Electoral College has to convene and vote, but does it say the law has to abide by it? After all, the states can jigger their voting system to change outcomes, so can the federal government have a law that says both EC and Popular vote have to match and if they don’t the popular vote is taken instead? Or if the popular vote is more than x number of votes it is taken instead?
@Iskios I also am not a lawyer. I do recall reading some interesting pieces regarding EC vote compacts between states, though. This approach may have the best potential for fixing the system. This one gives a good overview:

@Iskios Yeah, but to fix it, we need either a constitutional amendment (don't have the senate or the state legislature votes) or a constitutional convention (LOTS of issues here). So we need to work within the framework (win state legislatures and governors!) to make the change. This will take DECADES, so get in it for the long run. The other side did it for the Supreme Court. We need to do it for electoral processes to better reflect the will of the people.
