I understand the concern here. I understand that before the Space Karen, people went to Twitter for news, entertainment, and socializing.

The reality is we shouldn't go to social media for emergent updates on the health & safety of a community. We just shouldn't.

Imagine if we used social media to guide us during 9/11. Or the regional blackout in 2003. I would be dead.

Social media is ripe with hyperbole & overinflation. You should not use that to get disaster info.

Like when I had the active shooter in my neighborhood last month, I turned on the news. The police department was telling everyone to go to Facebook for updates. What if you don't have Facebook? I'm not on Facebook. I know if my mom was alive, there is no way social media would be feasible or humane for that age bracket.

I'm just saying. We gave Elon that power. The media became lazy because of it.

I just think about the idea that people are wading through Elon's bullshit to know if a hurricane or whatever is barreling down on them.

There are more people who don't have social media than there are people who don't have 24/7 traditional media. They need access to info that is not filtered thru that prism.

how's this for a vicious circle. a lot of official agencies are cleared to give official disaster info on fb, so they get used to it, but fb is another similar closed loop trash heap, so then the agencies have to spend all their time fighting a zillion conspiracies during the emergency as will as deal with the emergency because some crazy theories respawn with each of their posts. With no real attention spent on non fb comms to the public.

Exactly. But whether the information is right or wrong, not all people are on socials. The fact of the matter is if this country was different, none of us would be on socials.

So to say to the olds and the people who don't have the means, the life and death information you need will be on the platform you can't access is irresponsible as a society.
