PSA When referring to people or dear pets, use “who”; when talking about things, use “that”.

Example:

The dog WHO loves to go for walks wags her tail every time I stand up. My son WHO usually walks her is away.

The leash THAT I grab makes her wag her tail harder. We go out the door THAT is closer to the trail.

@CJLavoie It's still an interesting observation, that "that" serves as a relative pronoun for anything (more or less, depending on dialect) while "who" always requires some perceived personhood.

@ImagineThat I appreciate your observation. Reminds me of when I read a nonfiction book about trees and they consistently referred to them as "who". I liked that, but it surprised me and make me stop and think.
