HiClip: Boulder Patterns

The boulders are not distributed randomly or uniformly but are often arranged in linear or circular patterns. Narrated by Tre Gibbs.

HiRISE 3D: Tectonics in Hebes Chasma
The deformation pattern on the floor observed here will place strong constraints on the mechanisms that formed Hebes Chasma, tectonics and erosion.

HiRISE 3D: Utopia Region Knobs

There are several pancake-like knobs here but this one looks like it has a central summit crater. And is a little freaky, too.

HiPOD 1 August 2023: The Perseverance Landing Site in Jezero Crater

This image was requested in order to extend coverage of the Perseverance landing ellipse and enable red-green-blue colorization of the Jezero Crater landing site map. These post-landing images from HiRISE can help assess traverse routes and aid in science planning, in addition to filling gaps in coverage from earlier observations.

HiRISE 3D: Lineated Valley Floor Material

The formation of this terrain likely is a result of glacial processes. This scene is located north of the Arabia region of Mars.

HiPOD: Along the Edges of Mesas

Also visible in Context Camera images, the objective of this observation is to examine the exposures of layers on the edges of several mesas in the same field of view. The scene is located in western Arabia Terra, a large upland region in the north of Mars thought to be some of oldest terrain on the Red Planet.

HiRISE 10K: Sand Dunes and Ripples in Proctor Crater

The larger, darker bedforms are dunes composed of sand, most likely of fine size. Ripples tend to move slower than dunes. Because of this, over time,

HiRISE 3D: The Western Side of Hecates Tholus Caldera

Hecates Tholus is a volcano that likely erupted hundreds of millions of years ago, which created a caldera on its western flank.

HiPOD 28 Jul 23: Bright Linear Dunes West of Meroe Patera

These fascinating linear dunes at Meroe Patera were also identified in Context Camera images, which have developed in a sand starved region of the dune field, elongating from behind a scarp. This is a re-image of an earlier observation we acquired in 2020 to compare changes in shape compared to other linear dunes elsewhere on Mars.

HiRISE 8K: Uplift in Oudemans Crater

In this image, which is located to the east of the central peak of Oudemans Crater but along its floor, numerous hills are visible.

HiRISE 3D: Possible Carbonate-Rich Terrain in Libya Montes

The rationale for this one: “Fills gap in HiRISE coverage where the best carbonate detection is located (Murphy’s law).”

HiPOD 27 Jul 23: Dune Monitoring in Bopolu Crater

Meridiani Planum presents evidence of both ancient and modern active windblown bedforms. Assessing the activity of the active dark dunes in this area will be crucial for understanding the rate of Martian landscape evolution. Monitoring the activity of the dunes in this region will help to better characterize the landing environment from a geological and atmospheric point of view.

HiRISE 4K: Slope Streak Monitoring in Tooting Crater

The science rationale for this observation was simple: “Need additional images to keep monitoring this slope streak site.” Okay!

HiPOD 26 Jul 23: No Devil in These Details

But there are layers in the details! Our science goal for this observation is to get a high resolution image to see more details about the light-toned deposits in this part of Iani Chaos. Could they be sulfates or other hydrated materials? Iani Chaos is a region of chaos terrain at the southern end of the Ares Vallis outflow channel.

HiClip mini 4K: Like unto the Aiel Waste

This image features a section of Gorgonum Chaos, a set of canyons that may once have contained a lake. Some of the first gullies on Mars were located here.

This is a non-narrated clip with ambient sound.

HiPOD 25 Jul 23: Of RSL and ILD

Previous images of this area shows what appear to be recurring slope lineae (RSL) behavior coming from an interior layered deposit (ILD) on the north face. One image showed RSL, a follow-up indicated the RSL was not as lengthy, and another showed it as being subsequently longer. More images that show incremental changes are needed to confirm this as RSL. Additionally, these interior layered deposits might be composed of sulfate.

HiRISE 3D: Layered Materials on the Floor of Ritchey Crater

This has been one of the potential landing sites for the Mars Science Laboratory (now in Gale Crater), and high resolution was requested to assess the safety and evaluate the slopes.

HiPOD 24 Jul 23: Where the Wind Blows

With this observation, we look at changes since 2010 and with other subsequent images that we have acquired of this area. Bidirectional wind regimes were detected here, so tighter imaging will help understand when east- or west-blowing winds dominate. Dunes are particularly suited to comprehensive planetary studies because they are abundant over a wide range of elevations and terrain types.
