HiPOD 3 Jul 23: Possible Clay Deposits in a Crater Rim

The nearby Her Desher Vallis exposes a clay unit in its valley walls. This observation aims to determine if this unit can be visible elsewhere in the region, such as in excavations in nearby craters. This suggestion targets a 2 kilometer-diameter crater southwest of Her Desher that may have possible exposures, as detected in THEMIS and Context Camera data.

HiRISE 3D: The Central Peak of Taxco Crater

Peaks within craters are formed when material rebounds upward after the initial impact. This can give us a direct look at what was previously underground and learn more about the composition of the rock.

HiRISE Mars 4K (NASA): Chaos, Reconsidered

Aram Chaos is terrain that is located within a massive 280 kilometer-diameter crater. (This is a non-narrated clip with ambient sound.)

HiRISE 3D: Those Fractures!

Today’s HiPOD was too good to not also post as our 3D image of the day!

HiPOD 27 Jun 23: Fractured in Arabia

Also visible in a Context Camera image, this observation shows an interesting pattern of fractures on the floor of an impact crater in Arabia Terra. This could be an indication of incipient chaos formation. Creating a digital terrain model can help us try to figure out what’s going on in this scene.

HiRISE 3D: A Kasei Valles Cataract

At this location the Kasei Valles (north) lava flow feeds into a previous cataract through a narrow channel—should be an interesting site for understanding the behavior of the flow.

HiPOD 26 Jun 23: A Faulted Crater Rim

This observation features a crater rim that has been faulted by wrinkle ridge-like features that trend to the south into the east of the proposed ExoMars landing area. It is possible that the fault plane is visible in the crater rim.

HiPOD 23 Jun 23: Beatific Gullies

These very nice gullies at the northern edge of an impact crater located to the immediate west of Newton Crater, were imaged in a Context Camera observation, so they are worth a closer look in high resolution. We can use this image as a baseline for future observations to check for changes over time. Are there fresh deposits here?

HiRISE 3D: Layers in a Crater North of Hellas Planitia

The objective of this observation is to examine layers exposed near the top of a crater wall. This picture gives a good view of a light-toned layer between darker layers.

HiPOD 22 Jun 23: An Interesting Scene in Juventae Chasma

This image shows dark-toned, windblown sand that surrounds these mounds and yardangs. Other landforms in the area might be possible inverted stream channels? Fans? Odd layer expressions? Our goal is to try to deepen our understanding of the sedimentary rock record and geomorphic history recorded in Juventae Chasma, by looking at areas that are not the famous mounds.

HiPOD 21 Jun 23: An Inverted Channel Feature

This ridge feature show all the morphological signatures of being an inverted channel (sinuous, branching, often flat topped). It sits in the same stratigraphic position as Aram Dorsum, the branching inverted channel system that is an ExoMars candidate landing site region. The aim is to whether these inverted channels have consistent shapes over the whole region or if there is a diversity of forms.

HiRISE 3D: Martian Terrain Sample...in 3D!

If glacial processes were at work here, we want to measure channel depth and downhill direction and also to quantify orientation of any layering.

HiPOD 20 Jun 23: A Crater in Utopia Planitia

The objective of this observation is this crater mound to investigate its structure and origin. This is part of a broader campaign to study the origins of mounds in simple craters in Utopia. Note that the crater might post-date the formation of the small, thin channel we see here, although a part of it does seem to wrap around the southern (bottom) rim.

Off topic: does anyone here use the iOS/iPadOS app version of Mastadon have problems adding images? We routinely run into an uploading error, which forces us to use the web browser on mobile to make posts.

HiPOD 16 Jun 23: Cyclic Stratigraphy

The lower portion of this central mound in Kaporo Crater contains an additional portion of the stratigraphic record exhibiting cyclic characteristics visible in related Context Camera imagery. The addition of this image will enable correlation with stratigraphy in an earlier HiRISE picture to build a more complete stratigraphic inventory.

The goal of this observation is to monitor the defrosting of these dunes (or dust ridges?) for the next Martian spring.
