HiRISE 3D: A Candidate Future Landing Site in the Oxia Palus Region

Another good reminder of how HiRISE images can be used for future missions to characterize potential landing sites.

HiPOD 22 May 2023: Ridges in Huygens Crater

With this observation, we want to investigate the timing relationship between the wrinkle ridges and the quasi-circular mesas we see here. The floor of this 450-km diameter crater named after Dutch astronomer Christian Huygens (1629-1695) has an unusual texture. Smooth-topped mesas are scattered across a more rugged surface. The mesas are testament to a former smooth layer of material that is in the process of eroding away.

HiRISE 3D: Basal Units in the North Polar Region

“Basal” refers to the bottom layer or base of something, in this case, of the stunning cliffs here.

HiPOD 19 May 2023: Inverted Channels in Saheki Crater

The large alluvial fans in the southern Martian highlands have the potential to provide key insights into the history of water on the planet’s surface. The ridges on these fans are inferred to be the preserved remains of the fluvial channels responsible for fan formation. Saheki is 82 kilometers in diameter and was named after Tsuneo Saheki, a Japanese amateur astronomer (1916-1996).

HiRISE 8K: Layering in Western Arabia Terra

With terrain like that in Arabia Terra, it’s considered imperative to get more images to create stereo pairs for 3D images.

HiRISE 3D: In Syrtis Major

This image was taken to increase our coverage of the region, and examine volcanics and sulfates near smectite plains.

HiPOD 18 May 2023: Stratigraphy of a Kaporo Crater Mound

Kaporo Crater contains a divided central mound of layered deposits that indicate multiple unconformities in the stratigraphy. An unconformity is a buried erosion surface, where the bedding layers do not match. This re-image will help to resolve bedding orientation and bed thicknesses to understand variation in the stratigraphy and the unconformity between the lower and upper portions of the mound.

HiRISE 3D: A Rocky Massif

This may be part of the peak ring of a largely obliterated large crater, and may contain megabreccia.

he @NASAInSight mission ended in December 2022, but the data it captured on the inner workings of Mars will help scientists for decades.

Join us at 7 pm PT (10pm ET) on May 18 for a live chat about the mission and its legacy.

HiPOD 17 May 2023: Like Little Stars

This observation is part of a long-term monitoring campaign of this site to track the wind orientation and seasonal activity. The terrain is considered “non cryptic”, which means that we want to study seasonal processes at a site where the surface and surface ices are different than most of the other parts of the South Polar terrain.

HiClip mini 4K: Kull wahad!

This observation features a very large dune field near the center of an unnamed impact crater.

This is a non-narrated clip with ambient sound. See description for more information.

HiRISE 3D: A Gullied Crater in Tempe Terra

A small crater in Tempe Terra shows evidence of possible water gullies. Tempe Terra is a region that shows evidence of water as well as potential glacial features called eskets.

HiPOD 16 May 2023: Layered Deposits on West Candor Chasma

This image shows us an extensive and stunning array of well-exposed faults. This observation is very important for understanding the mechanics of faulting in these deposits and the tectonic history of the area. Candor is one of the largest canyons in the Valles Marineris system, and its formation still remains unclear.

HiRISE 3D: The Western Rim of a Well-Preserved Crater

Given the relative sharpness of the rim, this is a very well-preserved impact crater that looks stunning in 3D.

HiPOD 15 May 2023: A Fault-Deformed Crater

This small 1.5-kilometer diameter crater has an unusual oval shape. It is situated on a wrinkle ridge (a thrust fault) that appears to have been deformed by the tectonic activity, rather than postdating it. As these same wrinkle ridges deform the Oxia Planum ExoMars landing site area, we could learn about the wider tectonic setting of this landing site from craters like this.

HiPOD 12 May 2023: Layers of Galle

This observation is an extension of existing coverage of an unusual layered mound in Galle Crater. Imaging of the well-exposed unconformities within the stratigraphy may help indicate modes of deposition. As the layers within this mound are fine-scaled and often subtle, this site will benefit from the highest resolution. Galle is also known as the “happy face crater.”
