HiRISE 3D: A Crater with Gullies

And very lovely gullies at that. This is a reimage from one taken in 2006, to look for changes.

HiPOD 19 Apr 2023: Possible Chlorides in Terra Sirenum

Most suspected chloride deposits in the Eridania Basin are high-albedo (reflectivity) and found in flattish areas. Around the eastern basin rim, some of these chlorides are distinctively low-albedo, and found in channels. High resolution imagery here may be able to resolve some channel stratigraphy.

HiRISE 3D: A Crater in Arabia Terra

Come on, who doesn’t like a 3D image of a Martian crater?

HiPOD 18 Apr 2023: A Ridge in Claritas Fossae

An interesting ridge in Claritas Fossae that seems to be superposed over an older series of fractures. This would suggests that the ridge has to be younger and hence emplaced after the tectonic evolution of the area. This might be a surface expression of younger volcanic activity. An alternative explanation would be that this is an erosive remnant or a dike.

HiRISE 3D: Cones in Northern Mid-Latitudes

The objective of this observation is to examine a group of cones. These cones seem to be near what is called thumbprint terrain.

HiRISE 3D: Chaos Region in Ariadnes Colles

This observation of the chaos region was requested to further investigate the origin of this region. Was this region once an ancient inland ocean?

HiRISE 3D: Contact between Wallrock and Interior Layered Deposits

We are hoping to see if the interior layered deposits post- or pre-date the chasma wallrock.

HiPOD 17 Apr 2023: Unusual Crater Fill

A public target from HiWish: A possible ancient volcanic formation located near the Thaumasia Plateau with a summit caldera sitting on top of an elevated terrain of hummocky friable materials. Within the crater, an infill unit is horizontally mantling isolated knobs and the crater floor.

(Why is there some radio broadcast thing playing automatically when this site is loaded and how to switch it off? It's super annoying,)

HiPOD 14 Apr 2023: A Strangely-Shaped Crater

This small crater appears to be unusual in shape: its rim does not look especially round. This irregular shape may imply an unusual formation mechanism, such as subsequent impact, or some unknown geological process after its initial development.

HiPOD 13 Apr 2023: Ridges along an Escarpment

This observation targets an escarpment (steep slope) along a graben (depression) in the Terra Sabaea highlands. The light-toned graben floor bedrock appears to be composed of a layered material. This observation seeks to characterize the shape of the sinuous ridges at the meter-scale, as well as develop geologic context for their formation.

HiRISE 3D: Across a Dune Field

This image shows a traverse of outlier and barchan dunes, along with a presence of bright bedrock and ripples.

HiRISE 3D: Troughs and Ridges in Chryse Planitia

Wide troughs with a narrow ridge running down the middle. How did these form?

HiPOD 12 Apr 2023: Channels Intersecting a Crater in Xanthe Terra

This area contains segments of normal faulting and scarp boundary, both related to two phases of crustal collapse with perhaps two different mechanisms. Chaotic collapse of ambiguous (volcanic?) origin might be comparable with the formation of ancient caldera complexes at Arabia Terra. Scientists have long suspected that the valleys of Xanthe Tera were formed by water erosion.

HiPOD 11 Apr 2023: At the Boundary of Chasmata

In geology, “superposition” is used by scientists use to determine the relative ages of rock strata, or layers. The oldest rock strata will be on the bottom and the youngest at the top. With this image, we want to investigate the superposition relationship between the layered rocks and wall rock spurs along the boundary between Ophir and Candor Chasmata.
