HiPOD 10 Apr 23: A Chain of Layered Mounds in Chryse Planitia

This landform shows distinctive layering in Context Camera images, and is similar to other buttes to the far northeast that have been observed to have Mawrth Vallis-like stratigraphy. Understanding the connection between these landforms is vital to our knowledge of their formation.

HiPOD 7 Apr 2023: Climbing Dunes Escaping a Crater in Aonia Terra

This image from a stereo pair and DTM reveal one such location where sandy bedforms appear to be crawling out of a crater. This crater is near 1 kilometer deep and shows steep slopes particularly on the south face.

The expanded craters in this image have an unusually bumpy texture in the outer apron where the sublimation occurred. The bumps are too large to be boulders. This suggests that the ice had concentrations of other material.

HiPOD 5 Apr 2023: Waxing and Waning Winds

A dune’s steepest area, called a “slip face,” indicates the down-wind side of the dune and its migration direction as driven by local winds. At this location, there are many dunes influenced by eastward winds that were draining into Hellas. Meanwhile, other locations show that migration had shifted towards the opposite direction to the west.

There are many processes that can form such landforms, most notably hot lava. However, mud ejected from beneath the surface (through different geologic mechanisms) could also be a possibility.

With this observation, scientists can learn more about the nature of these deposits. The crater offers an opportunity to gain more information about the flowing behavior of these deposits and their thickness given that the crater size can be used to estimate its depth.

HiPOD 31 Mar 2023: An Olivine-Rich Massif in Northeast Hellas Planitia

This observation targets banded terrain located in an olivine-rich massif in the Hellas Basin. The olivine-rich massifs have been interpreted as ejecta blocks excavated from the lower crust/upper mantle by the impact. This observation will help to investigate deep crustal, or mantle materials not otherwise exposed at the surface.

HiPOD 29 Mar 2023: From Smooth to Collapsed

This region marks a transition from the smooth to hummocky surface typical of the Arsia Mons western summit to a collapsed terrain. The formation of the collapsed terrain appears to represent some of the youngest activity on the western flank and understanding the formation of these two units is critical for interpreting the developmental sequence of the shield.

HiPOD 28 Mar 2023: Hills in Eos Chasma

These hills are surrounded by small gullies, where there is likely activity related to recurring slope lineae, perhaps even slumps, which are masses of loosely consolidated material or rock layers that move a short distance down a slope. These features are similar to well-monitored hills in Juventae Chasma. Eos is located in the southern part of the Valles Marineris canyon system.

HiPOD 27 Mar 2023: Ridge Meets Butte

The curved ridge is darker than surroundings and appears to be an inverted stream channel. At this location, the inverted stream is interrupted or diverted by the presence of a couple of buttes or knobs. The main objective here is to get very high resolution coverage of the inverted stream materials (sedimentary rock?) and to include the buttes and attempt to discern their origins and relations to the old stream channel system.

HiPOD 23 Mar 23: A Flow Margin in Phlegra Dorsa

Some of our images, like this one, are acquired so that we can overlap with adjacent pictures to get enough coverage to create a continuous digital terrain model. We can also resolve fine flow textures and fractures. With the Context Camera as a “ride along” we can also generate regional stereo coverage of the area for a more complete view.
