HiRISE 3D: Channels and Ridges with Light-Toned Exposures South of Saheki Crater

Were some fluvial processes at work here at some point?

HiPOD 31 Mar 2022: Perseverance and Ingenuity in Jezero Crater

The 3 by 2.7 meter (10 feet by 9 feet) sized rover is sitting on the fractured bedrock of what mission scientists are calling the Máaz Formation, thought to be of igneous (volcanic) origin.

HiRISE 3D: The Western Rim of Well-Preserved Crater on the Northern Plains

There are some icy sublimation features that are of interest in this observation.

HiPOD 30 Mar 2022: A Recent Impact Site

Identifying new impacts on Mars often begins with noticing dark spots in Context Camera images, another instrument on MRO with a larger footprint than HiRISE but with lower resolution. This impact formed at most between February 2006 and March 2014, but other data could narrow that range.

HiRISE 4K: A Landslide and Dune Field in Ius Chasma

Here, we can see dark-toned material emanating from the landslide scarp and forming dunes and dark streaks that were carried downslope by the wind. (See link for full cutout and additional information.)

HiPOD 29 Mar 2022: Mounds near Mawrth Vallis

This landform shows distinctive layering in Context Camera data, and is similar to other buttes to the far northeast that have been observed to have Mawrth-like stratigraphy. Understanding the connection between these landforms is vital to our knowledge of their formation. High resolution will allow for viewing of sedimentary structures and other geological features.

HiRISE 3D: Rocky Terrain near Samara Valles

Rocky, uninviting yet oddly compelling to look at.

HiPOD 28 Mar 2022: A Fan-Shaped Deposit in Camichel Crater

THEMIS night-time data shows a fan-shaped structure on the crater floor, connected to a small inlet channel on the northeast rim, next to a large alluvial fan with hydrated silica to the north. HiRISE images may help discern the sedimentary features and identify past fluvial activities of different episodes. The crater is named for French astronomer Henri Camichel (1907-2003).

HiRISE 10K: Star Dunes in Tyrrhena Terra

The dune sands are most likely made of basalt, a common volcanic rock. The possible clay-bearing material is probably within the surrounding bedrock. (Click/tap link for full cutout and additional information.)

HiPOD 25 May 2022: A Channel in the Valley of Peace

This main channel in Peace Vallis has evidence of multiple fluvial events in the ancient past. Obtaining this observation for a stereo pair can allow for the creation of a digital terrain model that will greatly enhance the ability to determine information about the fluvial history of this feature. Peace Vallis is an ancient stream valley on the northern rim of Gale Crater

HiPOD 24 Mar 2022: North Polar Layered Deposits in Late Summer

This image is a late summer view of the North Polar layered deposits. Soon, the polar hood haze will obscure our view of this region until early Martian spring arrives in the Northern Hemisphere in about an Earth year.

The low-sun illumination enhances subtle topographic variations, accentuating the layering that formed from changing climates driven by periodic orbital variations.

HiPOD 23 Mar 2022: Possible Future Landing Site for Mars Sample Return

This image was acquired based on a hopeful scenario in which the Perseverance rover has an extended mission or two and travels outside of Jezero Crater to explore terrains to the west.

The cutout shows that there are diverse colors and textures, so this would be an interesting region to explore.

HiRISE 4K: A Spooky Place

This part of the full observation shows an extraordinary terrain literally pockmarked with what look like dozens and dozens of small impacts. This location is right outside of Sharanov Crater: could some of these be secondary impacts from excavated material that fell back after Sharanov was formed? (Click the link for the full cutout and additional information.)

HiPOD 22 Mar 2022: Defrosting Dunes in Matara Crater

The defrosting patterns and aerodynamic shapes of high-latitude dunes make great pictures.

This is the latest of a series of images to monitor gully activity in the late winter season. Matara is about 48 kilometers in diameter, located in Noachis Terra, an extensive southern landmass to the west of the Hellas impact basin.
